Red Campion, Silene dioica.

Very pretty coloured flower.I previously uploaded a "male" of this species, the male being darker in hue and carrying differing plant centres.

The weather here is past awful, it's just horrendously wet, windy and overcast. But, it is NOT going to stop me going out and getting a shot of this fine plant.
Camera wrapped up in poly bag, gaffer tape and cling wrap!!

The Red Campion a member of the "Pink" family of flowers or "Caryophllaceae"

This particular plant can grow to about a metre in height, it has hairy/downy stems. The flowers vary from pink to bright red, about 18-25mm across, unscented and with clefted petals. There is also a white (albino) sport.

The Red Campion is also "dioecious" ie there are both male and female plants. The male plants have only male flowers with stamens. Female plants have only female flowers with ovary and 5 styles. This is a female, it has ovaries and the five styles as required!!

The flowering season is May to September, but they are quite abundant, probably due to the successive mild winters and good growing conditions and habitat, well sheltered but south facing, wet and usually frost free. They usually inhabit wet woodland, rich meadows and other tall herb communities.

This one was spotted near a hedgerow, in a ditch, near a small stream in a secluded wood. The light conditions were not great and my flash was not performing properly. Considering the wet weather, this plant has stood up quite well,it is part of several dozen plants, mixed in with Cowslips and grasses.

The conditions, as stated are not good, so, I hope this less than perfect plant is acceptable, please accept my apologies if it is not.

Mirror locked, manual focus, remote shutter release, flash used, plus a thank you to the long suffering wife for holding the golf umbrella over me to keep me dry, while she got wet!!

Only minor PP work. Slight cropping, and minimal sharpening, sizing for upload.

Hello Howard,

A very sharp and detailed shot of the campion.
You must have been having better weather to have it in flower now!
Very good details of the pretty petals and the hairy leaves.
Your composition might be even better with a little less central composition.

Your wife deserves one of these points, I think, for stoicism!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)
