Fairy Flax.. Linum catharticum. Member of the Flax family.

Lovely delicate little flower of summer meadows. When they are in bud, they droop, only standing proud upon opening the petals. They grow to about 30cm tall, are slender and hairless. A perennial, they resemble the Sandworts, but carry five petals. Most of the other flax flowers are coloured, blues, lilacs, lavenders and pinks.

The Fairy Flax is white with this yellow centre. This particular one was not fully open, so has some "bud" like traits, ie, not fully erect, but getting there!!

The flower is about 4-6mm across, and hangs on thread like stems. Considering it's delicacy, it is quite a robust and hardy plant, capable of living in quite adverse conditions, ie, calcareous/limy meadows, dry banks and fens.

They flower May to September, but can be overlooked in deep meadow grasses. The leaves are oblong and short.

This one was imaged in bright Sunlight. It was on a steep bank, windswept and easily drained.

This is such a delicate tiny flower, I wanted to preserve it's delicacy and softness with the background intact.

ISO 100
Shutter speed 1/250
F-stop f/5.6

Manual focus, shot in RAW. Mirror lock, remote shutter used. No flash.

This is an "as is" shot, only slight cropping to the right and 40% sharpen at 1.2 pixels.

Sized and saved to jpeg for upload.

Hi Howard.
First I am very please and proud of your high estimation of my last shot. Many thanks.

Your close-up picture of a charming flower is so interesting and cute. I think the image is so poetic and nice. However, selected DOF is disputable a bit. I prefer a bit wider DOF but it is matter of taste. Soft lighting, delicate colours and nice composition create a fine impression. My compliments and best wishes.
Alexei.

Hello H
This is alovely crisp shot..The whites and yellows are really well expose against the lovley blurred bg..Perhaps though another couple of stops would have bought the stem into play whist still retaining the nice bg...Just my opinion!!

Hello Howard,
Superb macro of the Fairy Flax, here just the flower backed up by a perfect neutral green that really sets it off with just the hint of its stem. Excellent focusing and overall sharpness in a fine composition.
TFS this beauty,
Regards,
Ivan

Hello Howard
Extraordinary...
the white color is so difficult, and on such a small subject, it is even more difficult. Cheer and thank you for this splendour
