Bee, Bombus pratorum (hopefully) this one was imaged on a bramble flower. This is a long haired shaggy looking bee, about 9-12 mm long. The tail of this one is not clearly seen, but it is orange/red and extends over abdomen.

If viewed, under the second leg is a parasitic mite, and tiny eggs. I have noticed a reduction of Bombus in the flowers of late, and a fair percentage seem to carry this parasite. I have not found out too much information yet, but will hopefully be getting some information from a local expert.

ISO 100
F/8
shutter 1/200

Flash used, macro ring flash, (fires automatically) hand held, manual focus. Shot in RAW, PP work, only cropping, sizing and sharpening before saving copy to jpeg for upload.

I have another image to upload tomorrow that shows the coloured tail.

Hello Howard,
This is a very fine macro of this Bumblebee. I like its pose and the flash worked very well to bring out the details sharply. Fine colours too. I hope the mites don't decimate the species!
TFS and regards, Ulla
