[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This capture is one from the warmer month of September.
I recall chasing this Comma about like a child with a butterfly net and being so pleased when he finally alighted to capture some sun.
The background is a bit busy but I can live with it as it was my first capture of a Comma.

Polygonia c-album

The edges of this butterfly's wings are ragged in appearance. On the underside of the wing is a small white mark in the shape of a comma.

Statistics
Wingspan: 60mm.

Physical description
Commas have orange-brown wings with a pattern of darker markings. The edges of the wings are ragged in appearance. On the underside of the wing is a small white mark in the shape of a comma.

The caterpillars are black with a red band along each side and a large white patch on the rear part of the back (which camouflages them by giving them the appearance of a bird dropping). They have rows of spines along the back and sides.

Distribution
They inhabit Europe, North Africa and Asia.

Habitat
Adults can be seen flying in woodland clearings, hedgerows and gardens.

Diet
Adult commas feed from flowers such as dandelions and thistles. In late summer they often feed on fallen fruit, such as apples. Caterpillars feed on shoots of nettle, blackcurrant, hazel, hop and elm.

Behaviour
Adults hibernate during winter and emerge in early spring.

Reproduction
This butterfly has two to three generations between May and October.

Conservation status
Commas are not listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List 2000

Hi Billy,
a nice close-up picture of the Comma. Nice natural colours and very fine details.
It standout well from the BG ut I think it's a bit to centred but it's of course personal.
Well done.
Gert

Hi Billy
Although I've enjoyed some of the wildlife the recent cold weather has brought, shots like this make me yearn for the warm of summer and the accompanying proliferation of insects. The shot has sharp details and is well exposed. They really are a delightful species and I've done my fair share of chasing them about!
Kind Regards
Vinny

Hello Billy,

The butterfly in your close-up is shown withe xcelent sharpness. As it stays against the blurry background sharpnes is enhaced even more. The pattern of the wings can be well seen and the colors are well rendered.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Hi Billy,

It's one of those rare dull days with rain in the valley and snow on the mountains so seeing this beautiful butterfly is a delight. I love the pose on the very pretty leaves. The shape of the Comma is wonderful and you show it off with excellent details and lovely rich colors. Both the background and the centered composition are superb.

Jane
