Identification
Grey Plovers are bigger than Golden Plovers and have much greyer, almost silvery, upperparts. Their stouter head and especially the bigger almost bulging eyes, standing out in a paler face, are further helpful features. In spring, both plovers develop black underparts but in the Grey Plover the black is more solid and much more extensive. Grey Plovers look quite different in flight due to their obvious pale wing bars, pale barred upper-tail, white rump and, diagnostically, obvious black underarm patches.

Habitat
Winters on muddy estuaries and sandy beaches.

Migration
Birds wintering in Europe, move down from the high Arctic tundra from areas as far East as the Taymyr peninsula. In the UK there is a pronounced passage of adults mainly in May and during July-September, with juveniles moving through between September-November. Some immature birds remain through the summer.

Hello Pekka,
A nice one of a Grey Plover in winter plumage, taken in a fine pose with good sharpness as it lifts its muddy foot up. The DOF allows it to stand out from the busy muddy but OOF bg.
TFS,
Greetings from a snowy Sweden. :((

Hi Pekka
Good shot of this wader, it really shows how the mottled feathers act as camouflage against the mud. I like the mud-coated foot in the air too! ;p
Kind Regards
Vinny

Hi Pekka,

This Grey Plover is cammouflaged very well in his natural setting. Yet he stands out well showing off his nice face and well detailed plummage. It was nice of him to show off his muddy foot. A good composition and a great example of nature as it is.

Hi Pekka,

nice capture from this not so big bird.
Good of sharpness and lots of details.
Almost the same colours as the foreground.

Hej Pekka,
A fine capture of the Grey Plover in a nice pose! It is really well camouflaged against the mud but you've focussed in very nicely on it and details are very sharp.
TFS and best wishes, Ulla
