[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Grey Plovers at RSPB Elmley Marshes nature reserve. This was just before sunset and the light was get rapidly low. Lens fully open, shutter speed at risk level; I changed to ISO 1600 after this picture but the positions of the plovers were not as good.

Identification
Grey Plovers are bigger than Golden Plovers and have much greyer, almost silvery, upperparts. Their stouter head and especially the bigger almost bulging eyes, standing out in a paler face, are further helpful features. In spring, both plovers develop black underparts but in the Grey Plover the black is more solid and much more extensive. Grey Plovers look quite different in flight due to their obvious pale wing bars, pale barred upper-tail, white rump and, diagnostically, obvious black underarm patches.

Habitat
Winters on muddy estuaries and sandy beaches.

Migration
Birds wintering in Europe, move down from the high Arctic tundra from areas as far East as the Taymyr peninsula. In the UK there is a pronounced passage of adults mainly in May and during July-September, with juveniles moving through between September-November. Some immature birds remain through the summer.

Hello Pekka,
A very good capture of these Grey Plovers, especially considering the low shutter speed.
Nice low POV, sharpness and the evening light has given the image a pleasing mellow tone.

Hi Pekka,

An adorable shot of these Gray Plovers in very similar poses. They are beautiful with wonderful colors and excellent details. I love the setting and the composition. I always wonder where you are and in what position when you take your pictures. Were you wading in the water???

Hi Pekka. Even if the light was going you have taken a fine picture of the pair of Plovers. They look 3D on my computer. Great detail in the feathers and grasses with natural looking colours. Well done TFS.
