Landing of Avocets shot in RSPB Elmley Marshes reserve from hide.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
The four species of Avocets are waders in the same avian family as the stilts. They are found in warm or hot climates.
They have long legs and long, thin, upcurved bills (giving their scientific name Recurvirostra) which they sweep from side to side when feeding in the brackish or saline wetlands they prefer. The plumage is pied, sometimes also with some red.
The avocets have webbed feet and they will readily swim. Their diet consists of aquatic insects and other small creatures.
They nest on the ground in loose colonies. In estuarine settings they may feed on exposed bay muds or mudflats.
The Pied Avocet is the emblem of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
The four species, all in the genus Recurvirostra, are:
- Pied Avocet, Recurvirostra avosetta
- American Avocet, Recurvirostra americana
- Red-necked Avocet, Recurvirostra novaehollandiae
- Andean Avocet, Recurvirostra andina
In a large colony they are aggressively defensive and chase off any other species of birds that try to nest among or near them. That causes the annoyed remark "Avocet: Exocet" from some British birdwatchers.
They had been extinct in Britain for a long time because of land reclamation of their habitat and persecution by skin and egg collectors, but during or soon after World War II started breeding on reclaimed land near the Wash which was returned to salt marsh to make difficulties for any landing German invaders.

Hi Pekka,

Very nice in flight shot.
Wonderful how you've captured them with their landing gear out.
Looks like the weather was a bit grey, but advantage of that is that you don't get burn out spots in the lighter feathers of the birds.
All details, in the darker aswell as in the lighter feathers, are very nice and very good visible.
Well done. TFS!!!

Best wishes, Harry

Hi Pekka,
A nice flying action capture of these beautiful birds, Very well composed with excellent details. Thanks a lot for sharing.

What an awesome shot, Pekka! The details are very precise and I love that you've got them with their 'landing gear lowered'.
Very well done!
Cheers!

Hi Pekka,

Great timing to capture this pair as they are about to land. Beautiful blacks and whites of these Avocets. I like the different wing positions on the two. The profiles are very nice.

Hi Peka,

Well done in capturing these Avocets coming in to land. You have captured them at a good moment and with fine detail. Looks like the light wasn't great and you have done as well as you could to balance the shutter speed and depth of field. I like the workshop version, which gives a more classic composition, but yours is pretty good too.

Hello Pekka,
Lovely in-fligt capture of these two Avocets. We're lucky to have a few of these beautiful birds nesting here in a lagoon by the coast. Very fine details, light and colours. Well done!
TFS and regards, Ulla

Hello Pekka,
Beautiful photo of this Avocets. Very nice colours and details. I made a workshop. I hope you don't mind.
Regards,
Peter

I don’t know how you always manage the birds, so that when you ask them to land the birds took the right pose for photographs. A great shot.
