Dancing Pair of Grebes

Great Crested Grebe – Podiceps cristatus

In breeding plumage, the colourful crests/crowns make these birds easy to identify, the crest is raised in courtship. The sexes are similar in appearance but the male has longer crests and the larger cheek ruffs.

They have an elaborate courtship display in which they both put their heads underwater and bring up a piece of weed or such (Present) they then both come almost out of the water by rapidly paddling their feet, facing each other breast to breast with their presents and shake their heads.

Hi Terry, great capture, action shot. I like the detail of their head feathers.

Spettacolare momento di cattura, eccellenti POV e DOF, ottimi i dettagli con gocce e riflessi che evidenziano la dinamicitŕ dell'azione, molto belli i colori e una splendida luce. Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

Hi Terry,
I saw this behavior only one time. A few days ago.
I was puzzled 'cause I thought these were two males. Didn't know sexes were similar in appearance.
Well done
