Male Tawny Eagle (Aquila rapax) flying through the rolling hills and valleys of Kent. The title came from the intense look on the Eagle’s face and the way he was scanning the ground all round him as he soared way above the valley floor.

A resident and Palearctic migrant. The two resident races are found throughout Africa south of Morocco and east to northern Ethiopia. They are found in semi-arid grasslands, thornbush, and subdesert scrub. They are most frequently seen in wooded game areas where they perch conspicuously on tree tops.

The Tawny Eagle is about 62-72 cm in length and has a wingspan of 165-185cm. Like all eagles, it belongs to the family Accipitridae. It was once considered to be closely related to the migratory Steppe Eagle, Aquila nipalensis, and the two forms have previously been treated as conspecific. However, DNA studies have shown that these birds are not even each other's nearest relatives.

It breeds in most of Africa both north and south of the Sahara Desert and across tropical southernwestern Asia to India. It is a resident breeder which lays 1-3 eggs in a stick nest in a tree, crag or on the ground.

Throughout its range it favours open dry habitats, such as desert, semi-desert, steppes, or savannah.

This is a large eagle with tawny upperparts and blackish flight feathers and tail. The lower back is very pale. This species is smaller and paler than the Steppe Eagle, although it does not share that species' pale throat. Immature birds are less contrasted than adults, but both show a range of variation in plumage colour.

The Tawny Eagle's diet is largely fresh carrion of all kinds, but it will kill small mammals up to the size of a rabbit, reptiles and birds up to the size of guineafowl. It will also steal food from other raptors.

Gee, another geat capture Adrian. I notice that a lot of folks on TN use that Sigma 50-500 lens. I'm impressed with your hand held shot! I opted for the Sigma 80-400 because it is stabilized. It works really well except at the long end it doesn't like to shoot subjects over 250-300 feet away. I've been thinking about getting another lens but not more expensive than your 50-500. Do you have any advice?

Thanks for sharing a super photo.

Hi Adrian,
A magestic shot! Sharpness, pose, face, gesture, light, background, POV: a great capture!
TFS, José M.

You can see it is one of your pictures.
Eagle, good sharpness, composition ok...
I thought Tolkien was fiction.

Shutter 1/500...it seems to me 'long'
Aperture f/5.6...and this not a lot!
Focal length 135mm
ISO 200..low?
Exposure bias +0.33
Conclusion: you ARE the eagle photographer!:-)

Hello Adrian!
You are so skillful in-flight shots of these predators! pov and framing is perfect! blurred green valley looks wonderful as a bg! You captured amazing pose of the wing and its glance also! Congratulations and thank you!

Hi Adrian, I think looking across the valley is one of the beauties of Eagle Heights and it can add so much to an image when it is capture as well as this, fine work and hope to see you soon.

Hi Adrian
Excellent, magnificent capture of this amazing bird. You just keep on surprising me more and more with every new posting. I am way past paper bags when I open your thumbnails - I'm hitting the Valiums first 'dude'.
Your magic POV from this vantage point has once again paid of excessive dividends. Perfect composition, splendid colours, stunning details and I realise 1/500 shutter speed are really not that much for this kind of shot, and spot-on exposure control. I thoroughly investigated the photo and found there is no noise what-so-ever, not even in the eye.
Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

PS. You still need to share your secret about font sizes with me. I mean please would you?

Wonderful photo. Thank you for sharing...

Hello Adrian,
Superb shot! First of all I love the BG. Gives the impression that you were chasing him by plane or something ;-) Looks really great. The second thing I like are blurred wings. I think in shots like that wings don't have to be sharp. A little blur adds dynamics. The head is nicely sharp as it should be. I like the framing and POV too!
Great job!

Hi Adrian,

I got to say this is in IMO your best raptor flight shot to date. The PoV gives the impression you are up there soaring with him. DoF is just right to make the BG OOF enough not to be distracting but still have detail. Excellent panning technique and perfect timing to get the wings on a downward beat so you get a good detailed view of the markings in the plumage.

Regards, Mark.

This is MEGA! Wonderful work Adrian. Consistently high standards from your hand, well done.

Hi, Adrian.
How an expressive moment was captured. The posture of the wing allowed to balance the whole composition and moderately blur background strengthens the impression. Ravishing colours and great details complete this line. Perfect job.

Hi Adrian, truly excellent shot. I love the way you have included the hills in the background as this gives the photo height and a real sense of being there and flying next to him. Details, colours and exposure are all perfect. I really like your high POV here and the way you have blurred the wing slightly to give movement. I find your photography a true inspiration, keep up the good work . TFS.

Hello Adrian! I have just one word to describe your picture: FANTASTIC!!! By looking at it, we can feel the power of the bird! The photo is awesome : action + lots of details are a difficult objective to achieve and you realize it so well! I'm so impressed by this picture and the other you are offering in the past that I decided today to add you as one of my favorite photographer! Thank you very much to share those beauties with us!

Great shot, a classic raptor in flight.
The blurred wings and background convey perfectly the eagle in persuit of prey.
Stunning shot, well done.

incredible shot, the POV is amazing, looks like you flying right beside it. POV, sharpness and DOF are beautiful.

You must have been well positioned for this shot at eye level, Adrian. Such sharp focus and clarity of details are not easy to obtain while shooting a bird in flight. The credit goes to your skills and expertise as a nature photographer.
I can see not only the pupil of the bird's eye but also the expression in it which you have correctly identified as vigilant.
The image is perfect in terms of DOF, colours and details.
Thanks for sharing it.

Hello Adrian,
majestical in flight capture of seemingly slow motion of wings in powerful rapid flight. Seeing the landscape gliding by underneath adds to the drama and looks very exciting!

Hallo Adrian,

It looks indeed like an F 117 on its mission! I find it difficult to capture birds in full flight and never managed to get a decent shot. But you my friend prooved your skills in many pictures on TN including this one. The BG is wonderful, the colors are superb and composition great. There is no blur on the eagle although it was moving. Exposure and details are perfect, even in the shadows under the wings details are clearly visible! A wonderful job of a great artist! Very informative note too! Congratulations and TFS!

Eddie

Elegí esta imagen de tu colección Adrian, porque no es habitual una captura en vuelo con la nitidez, colorido y POV como esta... los detalles del plumaje y los rasgos del ave son impresionantes.
Una composición realmente perfecta.

I chose this image of your collection Adrian, because is not habitual a capture in flight with the clearness, colorful and POV as this... the details of the plumage and the characteristics of the bird are impressive.
A really perfect composition.

How did you manage to capture it?:) Did you fly a plane nearby?

Hi, Adrian.
Very good flight shot. I like the composition giving bird enough room to fly. Excellent exposure and perfect BG. Sharp.
