I can't imagine what caused the brown.
If the weather was wet then perhaps the entrance to his hole was a bit soggy?

Beautiful image.It is so sharp ,I loved the details we see from the plumage.Colors and focus are perfect.Excellent POV and DOF .Very nice bird that I had never seen before.

This is a Wow shot Peter! A great moment to catch, beautiful Woodpecker showing how handy it is to have a large beak. As usual, well composed with good focus, detail and sharpness. Colours are magnificent and you have caught great light. Excellent all round.
