Ischnura elegans

This is a pair of Blue-tailed Damselflies in their mating wheel. These are a very common Damselfly and the flight season is very long from May to September with some individuals capable of surviving 7 - 8 weeks although the average life span of the aadult is around ten days.

The Blue-tailed damselfly is also less hampered by hte fickle British weather and a full range of activities will be conducted even in dull, windy and cold weather. Also on the plus side for this species is that the time taken for the adult to become sexually mature is around 3 - 4 days after emergence. Mating has been observed in apparantly immature 'green' males and immature colour forms of the female. The copulation can last 3 - 6 hours - so a bit like humans ;-). It is thought that the long mating period takes place to prevent the female mating with other males. Unlike most other damselflies the female will oviposit alone and often late in the day when the males have got a bit tired.

I hope you like it.

Incredible. I have tried to capture these so many times, but they just fly off! I have many many blurred images *LOL*

AWESOME shot!!Excellent capture, great timing to capture this shot.Lovely colors, sharp details.

Paul,
Again, a very nice composition for a tremendous shot!
TFS, Laurent

Amazing, Paul! The shape of the damselflies in their mating wheel is striking especially since I have not seen a photo of it before. Colors and detail are very well done. Exceptionally done!

Amazing image with great colours, crisp focus and nicely cropped. I enjoyed the informative note.
Two suggestions: A dark border might work better than the white one that looks like an old fashioned white bordered print. Writing on the border detracts from rather than adds to the strength of the image (a very personal view, I know)
John

Excellent image Paul,
I have tried to capture them but your picture is much better - sharp and clear.
Have you tried to tilt the image a bit so the plant will be completely vertical?
TFS - Shir

Yes Paul.
I can not have any critique on this one.
the dof is great, colours are good, this is how people must photograph a wheel. good job,
gr. Jaap

Excellent for all the reasons previously mentioned, totally agree. One little nitpick: the tilt in the stem together with the blurred yellow line in the BG which points downwards/right gives the illusion that the pair will fall to the right any minute. Otherwise I like that line, as it accentuates the focus point where the two stick together at upper left. Wing tips are are positioned at another focus point bottom right which is good and stops the falling-illusion.
TFS,
Gabi

Paul, this is an exceptional picture. I'm not going to try and highlight any specific technical aspect that I like because I think the picture is perfect in every way.

I wish the points on this site was 0 - 5 instead of 0 - 2. A picture like this certainly deserves 5.

Very well done!

Hi Paul, this is a beauty. It is so clear and sharp and the DOF is fantastic. The colours come across very well and the shape of the 'wheel' is very striking. I like it :)

Hi Paul,

This is an excellent macro. Composition, details, colors and POV & DOF are all very good. Can't write anything negative about this shot. I wish I would be able to take macros which are only half this good. Well done & TFS!
