Araneus diadematus

A common spider but still beautiful. This is the largest I have found this year. In fact I have noticed that there are less this year than last (in the gardens I visit). This one had found a superb spot over a pond and I reckon she's doing pretty well for herself.

The white cross on the abdomen is a distinctive characteristic of this species. The white colouration is due to guanine cells (guanocytes) and this are directly below the cuticle which being transparent allows light to be totally reflected from the gaunine inclusions.

I hope you like her.

There's a little overexposure on the RHS of the abdomen from the flash, but I liked it just the same.

Hi Paul,
An excellent composition. The color and detail are amazing. The fill flash was alittle strong, but it still birngs out every detail well.
Nice Work!
Scott

Your title makes me smile, Paul.

An interesting POV on this one, good details, and composition.

I'll have to take off two points for the OE though....when I find it :-)

Congratulations on your special posting, and thank you for sharing it.

Paul,
Nice composition. The POV for this close up is wonderful.

Superb shot Paul!
The composition couldn't have been better. Details are percect as well.
If you didn't write about the OE I wouldn't even noticed that - the lighting seems to be very good.
Overall, very interesting post.
WELL DONE & TFS

Hello Paul!
Perfect capture.Lighting,clear details,sharpness,DOF,POV and composition are excellent.TFS...:-)

Finger on the trigger... :)

Brilliant use of the flash here Paul. Even though a bit OE the light looks very natural. Its hardly noticable and its something I still battle with a lot. The only give away is the head in the shadows. Normally it would have been distracting but I find it quite nice. It adds to the depth of the photo. We have a similar one called hairy field spider. Also Araneus sp. I don't think we have this one though.

Nice symetrical pose as well.

Great macro, Paul.
I like the composition, it's excellent.
Very good details, nice colours and good POV.
The little OE from the flash is not disturbing.
Excellent work.

PL

Very nice shot.
It's the first time I see a spider with a cross. For me there where all black or simply brown.
TN is a real mine of information about animals.

Paul, no doubt it's a great capture.

I like pov a lot. As for the overexposure you mentioned, it doesn't bother me. After all, the photo as a whole is much bigger than that.

Well deserved 2 points. I like the minimalistic approach with the strong lines running together a the anchor point. Would not have noticed the OE area due to the flash (thanks for pointing it out), might as well have been lighter hair, there is still good detail left in that region.
Effective composition, TFS,
Gabi
