[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Hiding in the long grass at Richmond I came across a pond with these strange large ducks swimming around. I have looked them up on Wikipedia and think I have an ID: Anas Cervus

Family
Swans, ducks and geese (Anatidae)

Overview
The Anas Cervus is a large and heavy looking duck. It has a long body and a long and broad bill. The male has large head feathers which are especially evident in late August to early September. The female is mainly read/brown. It breeds in the warmer climate of the South East.

Where to see them
Rare, likely only to be seen in Richmond Park London.

When to see them
Winters abroad, seen from early June.

What they eat
Seeds, acorns and berries, plants, insects and has been known to take down the odd mallard duck.

...ok I know they are just Red Deer really. I know they do like to wallow snd I have seen them many times in muddy water holes but I have never seen them in a lake. Please excuse the annoying grass. The red deer were very evasive (see last photo for the reason why) so I was concealled in the grass.

Not a high quality shot but nice behaviour to see

Hi Karen,

seems you might have gone a bit 'quackers'...sorry ;o) Lovely shot though, you have inspired me to get out early to the forest at the weekend...hope i have as much luck as you!
An unusual situation to see these deer in. Do you use any sort of cammo clothing or do you just wear green!?

cheers,

Paul

Hi Karan,
I really had to laugh while reading your note. What a very funny story and what a great research you did. Great details and excellent control on exposure. I love how the one in the back raises her tail. I like the spy like effect of the grass in the FG.
TFS,
Niek
