Hi
I know that TN seems to be awash with this sort of shot at the moment but I couldnt resist posting this. It is taken at the same place as my last post, Syon House. This I think was the first shot that I took that day and they all seemed relatively calm at this point. Once they had the blood pumping around there little bodies it was a much different story. This I believe to be a Lime Swallow Tail, I posted it as they seem very majestic and this was one of the only ones with a complete tail. It left me wondering if they damage like this so regularly in their natural habitat ? |

Hi Jai,
nice, well composed, well describing capture of this exotic swallowtail from far east Asia in pleasantly soft colours in front of a well contrasting dark background of rich vegetation. Obviously a freshly hatched specimen, well intact, still with complete tails.
Why are damaged tails seen so regularly in natural habitat? The "False head theory" offers an answer: Eyespots and tails on hindwings look like a conspicuous large head with antennae or legs - just in order to dupe predators like birds and lizards who always aim at the head when attacking their prey. These predators end up with a piece of hindwing in their mouth, while the swallowtail manages to excape into the unexpected opposite direction.
With thanks, and best regards,
Peter
