[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I think that this is a black headed gull. It was taken at stockers lake with Necip and Joey, I have dedicated it to Joey as he has really excelled at photography and has beeen great for treknature.

The Black-headed Gull (Larus ridibundus) is a small gull which breeds in much of Europe and Asia, and also in coastal eastern Canada. Most of the population is migratory, wintering further south, but some birds in the milder westernmost areas of Europe are resident. Some birds will also spend the winter in the northeastern United States.

This gull is 38-44 cm (15-17½ in) long with a 94-105 cm (37-41 in) wingspan. It breeds in colonies in large reedbeds or marshes, or on islands in lakes, nesting on the ground. Like most gulls, it is highly gregarious in winter, both when feeding or in evening roosts. It is not a pelagic species, and is rarely seen at sea far from coasts.

The Black-headed Gull is a bold and opportunist feeder and will scavenge in towns or take invertebrates in ploughed fields with equal relish.

In flight, the white leading edge to the wing is a good field mark. The summer adult has a chocolate-brown head (not black, despite the name), pale grey body, black tips to the primary wing feathers, and red bill and legs. The hood is lost in winter, leaving just dark vertical streaks.

This species takes two years to reach maturity. First year birds have a black terminal tail band, more dark areas in the wings, and, in summer, a less fully developed dark hood.

This is a noisy species, especially at colonies, with a familiar "kree-ar" call. Its scientific name means "Laughing Gull".

The Black-headed Gull is the prefectural bird of Tokyo and the Yurikamome mass transit system is named after it.

Hi Nick.
Wonderful in-flight picture. You managed to catch the gull excellently. Its pose is amazing as well as your POV and framing. I think exposure time is long a bit and aperture value is too small. However, great job. My compliments.
Alexei.

Hello Nick

This is a very nice picture indeed. The 1/400 sec leaves a nice motion blur in the wings which adds a natural feeling to the picture instead of a totally frozen bird. Very good focus with nice sharpness around the head. Clever handling of the ligth witout burning the white parts of the gull. All over a very nice picture and you did a great job on this one.

Best regards
Mogens

Nick, I have read your forum posting regarding the loss of quality after the editing.
Since you are in touch with Joe and Necip, I suggest you take their help in learning editing. It is possible your values on Photoshop are wrongly set.
Regarding this picture, this is very good capture of a bird in flight but it suffers from all those symptoms you have mentioned in your forum posting.
I will give you stats after downloading this picture and seeing its properties.
