Whiffling Geese.

An afternoons birdwatching at the Martin Mere Reserve saw us witness the arrival of some 1000 Pinkfooted Geese to their over winter feeding grounds. Flocks arrived at quite a height and as they approached the reserve they began to set themselves for landing with quite a number whiffling down. If you look at the photograph you will see a number are tipped on their sides and are actually dropping through the air sideways while others have turned over completely. They appeared to drop 10 or 15 feet before righting themselves. A great sight to see and after landing on the field they settled down and slept except for a few which kept their heads up on lookout.

Hi Peter,
Good capture of what seems to be a haphazard event, but is in fact a controlled decent to an area the geese have decided to use.
one wonders how decisions and actions like this are conveyed from one generation to another.

nice, unusual pic in TN, TFS Ori
Very interesting scene.Your note is very useful as without it and without knowledge of this specis, you really wonder what's going on.
It's fun to look at them in all position.
