Blue-Tailed Damselfly

Ischnura elegans f. rufescens

The Blue-tailed Damselfly is a common species which is able to utilise almost any water-body with the exception of fast-flowing rivers. It is quite tolerant of pollution or increased salinity and is therefore able to exploit habitats which would be entirely unsuitable for some of the more fussy species. The eponymous 'blue tail' is actually abdominal segment nine which is entirely blue in most (but not all) examples of this species.
Females exhibit a number of colour forms, the abundance of these forms changes as individual insects mature. The purple violacea form, is an early colour form that changes to a blue-green andromorph form or a green-brown form called infuscans. The most striking is a pink-red form called rufescens (the one here), which again is an early colour form maturing into the yellow-brown rufescens-obsoleta.

This is my first post with the new camera.I don’t have a macro lens for it yet,I’m saving my pennies.Hopefully I can get one before the end of summer!

Cropped,sharpened USM

Hope you like this colourful young lady!

Malgosia

They are little gems indeed. I don't think I have seen this one before. Its a nice composition and has very nice colors. The dteails are sharp but the DOF is just a tad shallow in the middle of the abdomen. It a minor nit. Very well done, Andy.

Great sharpness and wonderful detail, Andy. Your note was very useful. We call these dragonflies in the U.S. Nice post!
