[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Time for me to get back on site properly, instead of the BG, thanks to Steve for prompting me back into action.
Where have I been , Well always there trying to keep TN going straight, but at the same time a slight crisis in my own ability with the new camera, not getting the results I hoped it would, moving from Jpeg to raw proved not simple for me to get the hang of. also some of my choices of lens have not suited my style of shooting. I prefer to hand hold and see what I can find rather than tie myself down fighting with a tripod though I now use one more than I ever did with my old trusty Sony F707. So the spending some of a small legacy has meant that 2 new VR lens have transformed my photography again and left me free to wander around camera in hand, even the Huge 200-400 F4 is great in the hand. This image was shot hand held late in the evening, on a trip to a local major nature reserve right on the edge of the city of Nottingham with some of our camera club. We were walking along one of the defined paths through it I spotted this bird perched at the top of a dead branch singing it's head off. I managed to get a couple of shots of it singing , then it flew down to a lower branch and started as you can see here to pull a spiders nest apart to get at the eggs inside. This Bird is a Male Whitethroat (Sylvia communis) one of the Scrub warblers, you can tell it is male because the head is grey while the female is a paler brown in the head but still has the very recognisable white patch at the base of the throat.
A summer visitor from south of the Sahara to most of Europe, they prefer open scrub land with clumps of small tree's and bushes and have their nests close to the ground.
Shot in Raw and converted in Raw Shooter and Cropped and sharpened in Photoshop CS.

Good to see you posting again.
Welcome back.
A good capture of this Whitethroat getting at the spiders eggs.
This isn't a bird I'm familiar with.
It looks quite large for the warbler family but I do see the similarity.
I wondered if taking the blue down a touch might enhance the shot,although the white breast would possibly lose some of its whiteness in doing so.
Good post though with a very good note.

Good to see you posting again. Great shot on this White Throat getting himself some spider eggs. The colors and detail look good. I found that a mono pod was a good tool. I have IS in my 70-200 lens, but bought a mono pod before my trip to Florida. Much faster and easier to use, and doubles as a walking stick. It sent my keeper rate much higher.

Unusual and well-timed shot of a Whitethroat struggling with a spider's nest. Excellent depth of focus, sharp details and nice natural colours. Amazing how it is holding on to the vertical trunk! Brilliant capture!

Hi Robert, you captured a nice brief moment with this shot. Focus is razor sharp with detail on eye outstanding. Your exposure is excellent. I like the rich brown colors and unusual pose of bird. Good DOF.

I ignored your thumbnail yesterday. Today it was next to those I hadn't seen yet. My curiosity was triggered by this strange thing in front of the bill. I'm glad I clicked it open. Fantastic action shot. Rare one. (Easy to attract birds eating seeds but not possible for those eating from spider nests).
The eye is so sharp.
Noticable no-trilling performance with handheld tele in late afternoon.

Nice pose, DOF and POV Rob, colours are good, exposure is spot on, the spiders nest adds interest.

Usually when you first start using RAW things get worse before they get better, but stick at it and persevere, things will get easier.
