[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This fungus is not one I know, and it was not in my books. I did a quick trawel of the net and came up with this ID (Laetiporus sulphureus) more commonly known as the Sulphur polypore, but probably better is Chicken of the Wood , because apparently it is very good to eat. it is said to cook and taste just like chicken?
If I've got the ident wrong I am sure somebody will tell me.
This one is about 18inches / 45cm. across, it is growing in and fruiting on a large very old Populus alba (White Popular. The few details I have found out about its growth habits, are that it preffers Oak (Quercus) & Sweet Chestnut (Castanea) but will also grow on yew(Taxus), Cherry (Prunus) and Willow (Salix). Now Popular is not listed as a host, but Popular is a member of the Willow family (Salicaceae) Now this tree has been falling apart for as long as i can rember and is hollow up the middle we keep expecting it blow down in every gale. but this the 1st time I've seen it with a bracket fungus on it.
If anybody can direct me to a good site for details and images or a recomended book I would be grateful.

Wow... parece un montón de una alimento que aquí se llaman tortas fritas... jejeje.
Excelente captura, poco habitual en TN, lamentablemente.
Bellos tonos, excelente nitidez y perfecta presentacion.
Gracias por compartirla.

Wow... seems a pile of a food that is called fried cakes here... jejeje.
Excellent capture, little habitual in TN, lamentably.
Beautiful tones, excellent shapness and perfect presentation.
Thanks for sharing.

I like mushrooms and this is a baeutiful specimen, I think you are right, as the Laetiporus Sulphureus is very variable in sizes, colors and structure. I like the light, is perfect for the colors, looks very real.
This week end I will have a walk, mushrooms come early this year, I have already eaten some Macrolepiota :-b

Yum...I pick it and cook it alot this time of year. It is one that is easily spotted by in the woods because of it's lovely brilliant color, which you have portrayed very nicely here, Robert. It looks quite new and fresh. I like the lighting very much..almost as much as I would like to eat the Chicken-in-the-Woods.

Now all these critiques have tickled my taste buds and I want my breakfast. A difference that I noticed now is the awareness of fungi in Europe and in the US. Here in South Africa we notice it but there is no active awareness of it. I found that out when I posted my "Artist Conk". We certainly do not have the knowledge to go out and cook tasty meals with the edible ones ( which I,m sure we have too) The shot contains very food dof and detail. I like the color too. With my limited knowledge I think it is categorized as a Shelf Fungi as we call it (I see you call it a bracket funus) Im also glad to se this posting of a fungus, There seems to be very little postings of this interesting species.

Great shot of this mushrooms, Robert, perfect of coulours, the composition is very nice, great note too.

Robert, only the leprochaun? is missing. Very nice, good note too. When do we get a spell check? I, too, would like a fungus site. I shot some stinkhorn? I think, but are clueless and do not want to post it.

Beautiful fungus Robert. The colours are so warm and works real good against the thrunk. The dof is spot on.

Isuggest that you crop it just above the hedge to get rid of the fluorescent green field in the background. Otherwise it is a great capture.
