Thanks to Filipe this one has a name.
The Red-Cracking Bolete (Boletus chrysenteron)it would appear is a highly variable fungus, these 2 are only 5 meters apart under the eve's of the same Oak tree (Quercus robur), but on oposit sides of a private hedge (Ligustrum ovalifolium), and filepe recons that there is evn more variation in size shape and colour between the north and south of europe over which is is found.
The books say it edible but with nothing to recomend it, so while it will not kill you, the taste buds won't jump for joy.
The pictures I have posted like this to show the variation in the species and also the variation between normal and flash shots.
A) 15/08/04 F7.1 @ 1/1000sec at a zoomed 16.8mm and flash set on low power.
B) 15/08/04 F8.0 @ 0.3sec taken resting on my hand on the ground zoomed at 23.8mm (No Flash)There where a lot of blurred ones at this speed.
C) 22/08/04 F8.0 @ 1/30sec (No Flash) No Zoom.
D) 22/08/04 F4.0 @ 1/500sec flash on low power, but with the camera up-side down to try and uplight the underside of the cap, and no zoom.
Adjustments
each one had varring levels of the following treatments in PS8 (cs)
Shadows and Highlights
Brightness - Saturation
Burntool to some over bright bits
Unsharpmask
crop each to size and copy and paste onto new canvas.
save to web as large copy
then resize down to 800px wide
this will mean having to widen the image to above 250 pixels minimum hieght/width.
save to web as small (sm)

Very interesting post. Technically all the shots are very good. I really like your new approach in posting these shots and it encourages team effort here on TN. Thanks for posting

Nouvelle série intéressante de Bolets ! Il n'est pas facile de photographier ces gros champignons avec peu de lumière, dilemme avec ou sans flash...
Well done !

very nice combination of photo's Robert.
I enjoy the mushroom photo's a lot because I am self a mushroom freak.I have made last week almost 150 photos of mushrooms. I must say fantastic ones, but I like yours also. Very good job and a good note as well. good work

All of these are beautiful, details are spot on, but I think I like D best - it worked really well turning the camera upside down to get light on the underside (and clover leaf) too ;-) B and C, good jobs for handheld at that speed.

Good set of shots Rob, I wonder if it would have had more impact with just A & D? Anyway, they are all good shots and the not eis very imformative too. Thanks.

Great series Robert and very creative idea turning the camera up-side down on the last one and it worked out perfect. This one is my favourite too.

Very nice post, this is a very extended mushroom and there is a lot of problems to identify. I am glad you gave me the merit of identify this one, but I am not an expert. I only know the ones I like to eat, and those that are similar and I must not eat :D
Thanks for posting the four images, they are very descriptive.

Once again you show us just how diverse this site could be given some initiative and a good sense of what it's all about. Great Robert, you set the pace... we'll follow.

I'm a bit of a mushroom fan, and so find these fascinating. The low angle of view works well for these. Showing us variations in light is also a helpful idea.
