Pixie Cup Lichen
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
The Pixie Cup Lichen (Cladonia fimbriata) is one member of a very distinctive group of the lichens. The family are easy to spot with these little raised stalks with the cup like structures covered in fine grey/green scales, the edges/rim of these cups form the spore baring area of the lichen and turn brown when releasing the spores. The tallest of these stalks is probably only 1cm maximum in height. They are growing here on an old wooden plank thathad been in a damp shaddy spot under some trees.
you may also notice the 3 red dots at the top of the image, these are another fungus possibly one of the Nectria's which also like rotting wood.
I used my new 2nd hand Benbow 1 tripod for this shot it is abit of an unconventenal shape with the 3 legs and the stem being hinged on a single bolt, allowing the legs to be lowed all the way down to flat for low lwvwl shots and every thing inbetween. the the camera fits onto a sliding bar which can be angled from vetial up to vertial down and also slide in and out so you can reach into a hedge without taking the main part of the tripod in with you.
I also used a sheet of polished aluminium to reflect some light back into the image to try and reduce the shows from the low winter sun.
Hope you like. |

Hi Robert
Just spending part of a day by looking backwards on images posted some time ago and found this one. I am far from an expert in lichens and fungi and stuff like this, but I can still see when some have done a great job. I have tried to do pictures like this with my Canon 100 mm macro lens an still not succeeded - out of focus. This year I wil try to bring my tripod and give it another shot.
Robert this is a fantastic capture with perfect dof. The colours look very good and natural - even without knowing exactly how the colours are. The three orange things in the top of the picture contribute to all the green stuff in a nice way.
Very pleasant to look at - looks like a landscape itself. TFS.

Hi Robert
Just by reading Clive's comment, I already learned something about fungi that I did not know before. "Troup of pixie cups", what an interesting plural form. It looks like a scene from some sci-fi movie.
Your composition is great and enhanced with the inclusion of the other vegetation. Although the scale is not clear, these other plants do provide some perspective.
The colours are rich and well saturated while the focus is sharp and provide good details.
Great work and TFS.
