Onother from the back files left behind because so many had been posted at the time, revivied becuase it has become a competion print for this winters photo club season.
A Meadow Brown (Maniola jurtina)taken resting on a thistle leaf in on of the nursery poly tunnels at work. the photo has been rotated slightly to make the leaf vertical and place the butterfly across the corner and looking out to the right which is surrposed to look better.
(sorry will have to finish this note later dinner just being put out)It is now several hours later in fact nearly midnight UK time.
Open the image and draw a line using measure tool then rotate arbitary to aline the leaf vertically. A crop of 28.22 cm X 28.22cm @720 dpi this higher DPI is because i was preparing the image to print as a high quality long lasting print from the pigment ink epson 2100 they claim 75 yrs on the right paper (we shall see)
It has had manual levels applied, followed by clone tool to a couple of Dark spots in the BG and burn tool to a bright edge of the rear of the wing and the white hairs on the thistle which looked like they were over sharpened even before sharpening because they are so white.
Sharpening was done by converting to Lab colour and selecting the lightness channel in channels and then applying Un-Sharpmask to this then converting back to RGB colour.
At this point save to print file and reduce to 72DPI in image size for posting here on TN the 28.22cm X 28.22cm converts at this dpi automatically to the 800 X 800 dpi maximum for TN.
Post and hope you like.

Rob:
Nice, sharp shot and full of fine detail - but this insect is Maniola jurtina - the Meadow Brown, despite the appearance of a partial double eyespot on the forewing - it's just a variation of the normal single eyespot. Sometimes the field guides just don't cut it!
Regards, Nigel

If I were one of the judges on the competition you surely would be among the winners with this one Robert. I like it very much. Excellent sharpness/dof, plenty of details in the bf, no noise (could be shot by a Canon;-) and nice colours. - Hope the judges value your efforts.

Definitely a winner in my eyes, Rob!

Wonderful details, colors and composition.

Great job, thank you.

Hello Robert
Great sharpness, composition and texture in the shot - I like it very much. If you are so inclined, there is still a bit of luminance headroom.

Hi Robert

Short on time to give a well deserved indepth critique, but this is a stunning shot. Nicely composed with good sharpness and detail. Well done. Thanks.
