Australian Black Swan

Taken at the same location as Yesterdays Image of a Moorhen in Rushcliffe Country Park and the main reason I went to try for some waterside images.
This Australian native flew in not from Aus. but probably from somebodies collection though it had no rings on its legs so probably not an official wildlife reserve.
Anyway it settled in to make the best of the food and shelter until the local pair of Mute swans decided that they wanted their patch back ready to start breeding.
The Sunny Sunday morning I went down it was at one side having a thorough clean and preen with the low winter sun at my back , unfortunately just out of this shot is a series of artificial floating islands which are in the BG of most of the shots Including the most dramatic ones of it stretching its wings standing upright in the water ;0((( .
Anyway this was taken after it had finished and it raised both its feet out of the water and kept them there , possibly to warm them up in the air.
Again taken sitting on the ground for a low POV by the waters edge, Hand held for flexibility, but by sitting still it allowed me to become accepted part of the scenery so that their behaviour became more natural for such a public place.
Shot in RAW and converted to TIFF in Rawshooter, reopened in PS(CS) crop to size, then burntool set for highlights @9% and soft edged brush and diamiter reduced down so that just the bright areas on the beak which were a little too distracting against the dark feathering were taken down a touch.
Sharpen with USM and fade in Luminosity. Save with Save as to convert to a Jpeg file and reduce the file to below 200K.

Hello Robert
Maybe he lifted his legs out of the water because the terrapins sucked on his toes. I think you done well to highlight the contrasts in the feathers and show us his nice colors. It's a good composition as well.

i dont see many of these around my way but sure would love to get a shot of one some time.
you,ve caught some nice detail in the bird and could have easily burnt out the detail of the black plumage, you,ve managed the exposure well to include the ripples and colour in the water.
a nice shot , i like it a lot.
