Zygaena trifolii

Much like the 6-spot Burnet but with, yep you guessed right, 5 spots on each wing. There is another very similar species and that is the Narrow-bordered 5-spot, this has a narrow black band on the hindwing. A small area of the hindwing of this moth can just be seen along with its (thicker) black band. In any case I think it is a very nice looking moth. Depending on what angle the wings are viewed at the dark colour can appear black, blue (as here) or green, so the surface scales presumably act a little like a diffraction grating scattering different wavelengths of light at different angles. I may post another picture showing this.

There are a few forms of the burnets, some where the reds are replaced by yellow. I'd love to find one of those.

I hope you like it.

Very nice picture. Excellent composition, perfect sharpness and colors.

Not found this one yet here, Paul, but it's a nice subject, specially with interesting various colors according to the POV. You've caught it very nicely, using the sun to enhance it's colors. Well done.

Hi Paul, this is a beautiful specimen. The one with the yellow spots must be wonderful too. I shot a moth just like this but without spots, what a shame. :)
Sharp details and lovely colours with efficient Dof.
Well done.

Very nice capture Paul. Id be falling over myself to capture this if I spotted one, its a beauty. Very nice work.

Hi Paul. Lovely image, shot with great technique. I love the light and colours and your composition is great. Great DOF and detail. Funnily enough I saw a Burnet for the first time ever last week but I didn't know there were 5 spots as well as 6 spots (let alone yellow forms) so I didn't check it out in any great detail.

Another nice capture Paul. Beautiful colours and as usual sharp and detailed textures. This one has a special beautie-horror aspect that makes this insect always interesting. I have never seen one here in Spain, only from TN shots, so thanks for sharing.

Hello Paul,

Excellent macro of a Z.trifolii.Very good colors and a perfect light.Good job!

TFS

A perfect macro taken with the same lense that I've got! A colourful moth on my favourite flower. Do you find, though, that the Sigma lens gives you a narrow DOF and what do you do to avoid it? do you simply stand back from your subject and then crop?

In any event, I really like it and it goes to my favourites.

Thanks for sharing,
Shelly.
