[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I took this back in August and it took me some time to ID it. The ID I have given is Xanthogramma pedissequum (no common name) and I have found out that this species is now split into three species!

I think this is a rather smart looking Hoverfly with it's solid black and yellow markings, it has a plastic toy look about it. The larvae of this genus live under the protection of ants (Lasius niger and L. flavus) where they eat ant attended root aphids.

X. pedissequum is a southern species and is widspread in grassland and open woodland rides, especially where grass is short and where there is some bare ground. The flight is pften very low and sometimes males can be seen hovering just a few centimetres above the ground.

I hope you like this one.

Great Paul.
Good exposure.
Nice colours and composition and very sharp.
Excellent work.

Nice macro Paul, I'm sure the ID is right ;)

Paul, A superb shot with crisp detail & great color! The whites dazzle the eye!! Well done!!

At first glance I thought this was another paper wasp of some sort, but then the pose looks atypical for a hoverfly.I take it this is a very small hoverfly. Nice and clear. Well captured Paul.

Wonderful shot. great focus and crisp detail.
I love it. It's now part of my favourites.
Well Done

Superb macro Paul. At first glance it looks like a wasp good to know the difference. Since joining TN I'm amazed just how many different types of Hoverfly there is in the UK. Well done.

Really very nice Paul the colours and control of the whites is very good and the body is pin sharp.
Good note from a genuine piece of detective work, just what I hoped see happen in TN.

Superb shot Paul! I like contrast and reflections on this hover's body.

It had me Paul. I looked and thought it a wasp of some sort. When I read your note I had another look and saw the small antennae. They're not called bee mimics for nothing. Nice of you to show us this one. You are building up quite a collection.

This one is a real mimic, very convincing.
Well captured with excellent composition and colours.
Great work,well done.

Good shot, Paul. You really know how to find and shoot them. The color detail is amazing, it looks plastic(but I know you won't do it to us). Very good note.

Excellently sharp capture with full use of the F-8 - just the near wing falling outside DOF range. Good light & handling of the whites. You're right, it does look a bit like a plastic toy left behind ;-))
