[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Today I am back on to one of my favourite subjects to photograph, hoverflies. And this species is one of my favourite hoverflies. I have featured this one here here and here.

This species is A common hover-fly often seen visiting garden flowers and wayside species such as hogweed and ragwort. It favours damp, wooded sites and males often hover over water. Flies May-September. They love to sunbathe, as this one is doing, and can be known as a sun-fly. The larvae live in stagnant water, although I see these flies more often than not beside very clean streams and ponds. This one is, I think, a female. The males appear to have larger eyes, also this one has quite a distended abdomen so maybe she is ready to lay eggs.

This one is occasionally known as the “Sun-fly” as it has a habit of basking on leaves and other sun-drenched surfaces. The larvae are often found in mud, manure, rotting sawdust and other places rich in organic material. Adults are common near these places but can be found anyway as they wander widely, and will go anywhere where there are flowers to feed on. In my experience I see them a lot around water mint. It’s preferred habitats are sheltered flowery places such as woodland glades and gardens. It’s a common European species.

The notes are a bit repetitive but I can’t find much more information on these…next year I hope I can see something to report.

Hope you like it.

This one looks like an advertising of hover flies. It is in the perfect place, very artistic composition and to show us the beautiful pattern on the tail. Very good lights, shapness and colours. Wondelful stuff.

Otra excelente imagen de tus preferidas... en este caso con un agradable POV para ver todos los detalles de su lomo.
Excelente composicion e iluminación... personalmente creo que el Unsharp Mask ha sido levemente excesivo... pero es sólo un punto de vista.

Another excellent image of your favourites... in this case with an pleasant POV to see all the details of its back.
Excellent composition and illumination... personally I believe that the Unsharp Mask has been slightly excessive... but it is only a point of view.

WOW great picture the macro is excellent and the picture is very sharp too!
A bit crop will fix the picture right and it will make her better!

Crystal clear as usual. To crop,or not to crop...that is the question.Whether it is nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous critique,or to take up arms against a sea of bubbles, and by a posy, bend them...(at least I think thats how it goes).
These hoverflies are very common here as well.I can usually find a hundred or more in my garden at any one time. They love the dandelions in the lawn.(I don't).
Nice post...thank you.

Paul, excelent macro of the hoverfly. The image is crisp, clean and sharp.
The unsharp mask is abit over sharp because of the crystal on the wings edges.
Well done

Mike

Paul, great colors, composition and pov. Sharpness is excellent too.

Black and yellow work well together, and your shot shows this.
