I want to dedicate this to Gert Ellstrom (Elis49) for all the superb bird photos he's shared with us so far. I remember seeing one of a Starling and was amazed at how colourful these birds are close-up which inspired me to capture my own shot of one.
I found this fella on my chimney singing his heart out, sadly the sky was overcast so I couldn't get any nice light shining onto the iridescent feathers but you can get a taster of how pretty these birds actually are!

By the way, if you are quite concerned about shooting in the rain, like when I took this, I recommend you get an Optec Rainsleeve! It's about £7 for two and basicallly they're just a water-proof bad that fits any DSLR with a longish lens. It drawstrings tight around a lens hood and then a small hole fits under the eye-cup so you can see through the viewfinder. It's complete genius and for a tiny price :-)

Here's a little bit of info on the Starling, courtesy of the RSPB:

Latin name
Sturnus vulgaris

Family
Starlings (Sturnidae)

Overview
Smaller than blackbirds, with a short tail, pointed head, triangular wings, starlings look black at a distance but when seen closer they are very glossy with a sheen of purples and greens. Their flight is fast and direct and they walk and run confidently on the ground. Noisy and gregarious, starlings spend a lot of the year in flocks. Still one of the commonest of garden birds, its decline elsewhere makes it a Red List species.

Where to see them
Conspicuous and widespread in the UK, occurring everywhere except for the highest parts of the Scottish Highlands. They are most abundant in southern England and are more thinly distributed in upland areas with moorland. Still one of the UK's commonest garden birds. Huge roosts are found in plantations, reed beds and city centres.

When to see them
All year round. Large numbers arrive in autumn to spend the winter here.

What they eat
Insects and fruit.

Thankyou very much for viewing!

Ho Joe,
excellent detail and reproduction of the Starlings markings, very good clarity and colour for such a drab day - looks like the weekends not going to be great either!

Impresionante ángulo el elegido para el disparo, consiguiendo además plasmar toda la belleza del plumaje del estornino. Preciosa fotografía.

Hello Joe,

You have posted a very good shot of a starling.
They are not easy birds to photograph to make their lustrous colours show up, and their eye tends to get hidden somehow! I have several shots of them but cannot post them as they look blind!

Excellent sharpness and goo composition!

kind regards,
Bev :-)

Wow Joe - this is stunning. Even in the dull weather you have caught some amazing colours and details in the feathers. The Canon 100-400 seems to work well for you.

I'm looking for a rain sleeve - where did you get yours from?

You have captured the plumage of this bird very well despite the weather, Joe. I agree that this is the best feature of this bird.
Do I see sone noise, especially around the eye?
Well, that's a minor nit.
Great job again.
Have a great day!
