This one is for my best mate, Nick Acutt (Nick27). We both went to the river at 6:00am to get some early morning shots and had a great time (I did atleast!).
This Grebe was nesting near the bank and I got a few shots of it though this was taken on Thursday.

I used a monopod to steady the camera.

I hope you like this one!

GREAT CRESTED GREBE

Latin name
Podiceps cristatus

Family
Grebes (Podicipedidae)

Overview
A delightfully elegant waterbird with ornate head plumes which led to its being hunted for its feathers, almost leading to its extermination from the UK. They dive to feed and also to escape, preferring this to flying. On land they are clumsy because their feet are placed so far back on their bodies. They have an elaborate courtship display in which they rise out of the water and shake their heads. Very young grebes often ride on their parents' backs.

Where to see them
Lowland lakes, gravel pits, reservoirs and rivers. Also found along coasts in winter.

When to see them
All year round

What they eat
Mainly fish

Thanks!

Hi Joe,

Excellent shot. Very good sharp details, natural colours and good composition. Amazing that with the lens wide open DOF still covers the droplets on the back of the bird and the whole bird is sharp. Good work. Lot of discussion about the sharpness of 100-400L especially wide open and this proves the critiques wrong. Our lens is sharp as mine is too.

Hello Joe,
Fine capture of a Great Crested Grebe posing well to show the head in great lighting despite the frontal POV. Excellent composition against the rippled water, the sharpness of the grebe helping to make him stand out.
A very nice image and thanks for sharing it,

Hi Joe,
Thanks for the dedication, and for a great (if tiring) walk this morning!
Great quality, sharp with good DOF,
Nick :-)
p.s. please read my forum!

Bonita Joe, y es un ave que al menos aquí no se deja fotografiar fácilmente, supongo que en Inglaterra tampoco jajaja, por lo que supongo la toma está tirada desde muy lejos . Buenos resultados conseguidos.

It's pretty sharp with good details, well composed with
a very nice low POV.
Agree with the DOF, it's amazing you got it with f5.6.
Well done, my young friend.

Almost as a poodle which as just come from the barber shop...or whatever they call "clip joints". A neat part of nature it is indeed Joey. The nice side glance showing off the important colours and profile. Well framed and seen.
