[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This one is for Akif (Raptorman) for all his incredible bird-of-prey images. A great inspiration to all of us!

This was a very lucky photo as I basically just pointed and shooted as soon as I saw the bird which looked unusual. I brightened it up in PSCS3 and to my astonishment found it was a Sparrowhawk! A definate first for me.
Also I was wondering if anyone could help me with an I.D. While photographing geese at my local lake a massive Swallow, much larger than our common residents, with a red breast and darkish back zoomed past. I'm definate this was not a Barn Swallow, Swift, or House Martin. I sadly couldn't get a shot so I understand if it's too hard to get an I.D.

I hope you like this one!

Latin name
Accipiter nisus

Family
Hawks, vultures and eagles (Accipitridae)

Overview
Adult males have a slate grey back and white underparts, closely barred with orange. Their grey tail has 4-5 dark bars. Females are larger, with brown upperparts, a white stripe over the eye and dark barring underneath. They look heavier than the males. Their broad, rounded wings and long tail are adapted for flying between trunks and branches enabling them to weave in and out of trees at high speed. They never hover like kestrels.

Where to see them
In the UK it is found everywhere where, except for parts of the Scottish Highlands, the Western Isles and Shetland. It is found in woodlands, along hedgerows and in parks and gardens. Usually seen flying fast and low in pursuit of prey, or soaring high on rounded wings.

When to see them
All year round.

What they eat
Small birds

Thanks for lookin'!

Not being the bird in flight pro...or even close...I am not the guy to ask, but it looks to me like you got lucky as I did a while back at one of our lakes here..There is a summer ahead so I am going to try...keep on pushing me with shots like these and I'll get something! Thanks Joey..

Hi Joe,

How lucky can you be to get this Sparrowhawk for the first time almost accidentally. I'm not sure if I have seen this one before. Not only did you get a good shot of him but you caught him with his wings positioned so well. I love striped markings.

Hello Joe,

The Sparrowhawk in full flight this is spectacular.
Open wings with a very lovely structure of the feathers.
Very well captured and nice presentation.

Best regards,
John.

Hi Joe,
Great catch, good you could take advantage of the opportunity and come away with at least this hand-held capture. I like the comp & POV here. Not the best quality, but very good work on such short notice ;}
Well done,
Howard

Hi Joe, splendid sparrow in superb flying pose, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hello Joe looks great, with some nice detail and excellent fast flying pose. I haven't got a single shot yet myself, still in hope, we have some at Stockers. Despite the difficult light I thought you did very well. Look forward to next trek meeting you were missed, tfs rgds Necip.

Joey, this is wonderful! I have never seen this bird before, and hope to see it some day. Very lice angle and the birds eye is wide open. Thanks again Joey! Cheers Josh Lewis.

Hello Joe,
First shot of Sparrow hawk and that too in flight! Well done Joe.
TFS,
Smitha.

Hi Joe,
Although the capture is a point and shoot one it has been well captured. Anyway there are some noises and that is because of the UE one I suppose. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hello Joe
Congratulations on this Sparrowhawk inflight capture.
The details are very good indeed..I have been watching and following Sparrowhawks for months and have only got one decent shot..but its not an inflight!!
Top work and Im afraid I cant help with the ID..It would be great to find out what it was though.
I hope we can all meet up again soon.

Hello Joe,
Very clever to catch the Sparrowhawk in flight - when I see one it seems to fly past lika a flash of lightning! Good focus on the eye and sharp details. Beautiful patterns and colours too.
Many thanks, Ulla
