I found this little Alder fly down by the lake. I thought it was just standing on some part of the reed but realised after a while that it was actually laying its eggs!

I hope you like it!

Alder fly - Sialis lutaria - Family: Sialidae

The alder-fly is black with greyish-brown wings with black veins. It is very common and can be found near ponds and sluggish streams with silted bottoms and an abundance of weed or plant detritus. Despite its name, it has no association with alder trees, other than being found on foliage beside water, which is where alder is usually found. It lays its eggs in large batches of 200 or more on plants or other objects at the water's edge.

The larvae are aquatic, living amongst mud and detritus and preying on smaller insects. Adults can be seen resting on emergent vegetation around the pond, mainly in May and June, often in large numbers.

Food
The larvae live in silt at the bottom of ponds and are carnivorous.

Prey
Water invertebrates

Thanks!

Hi Joe

You know what this means, don't you? In about 2 weeks, you'll be seeing your first damsels there :)) Good luck "hunting" :)

This is a superb macro, mate with an excellent timing to it too!
The details here are impeccable and the DOF is absolutely perfect - the entire alder fly and its eggs are in full focus while the BG is in such a nice blur...truly great work!
Very nice flash work here as well, but also the nice vertical compo which works fine here.

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hi Joe

This is a remarkable contribution capturing this insect while its busy depositing her eggs on this 'reed'. So many times we capture insects or animals just standing there, doing nothing, but this one is busy ensure the survival of its species. So, it was busy with the most important activity, the very reason why this insect existed for. Well seen and captured.

The vertical composition worked fine for this shot. You showed the important detail and it was unnecessary to include anything else. The cropping is spot-on with the reed towards the left and the Alder fly towards the right. You got it all right with that impressive aperture setting thus ensuring that the DOF covered the complete range of the insect yet still worked well enough to isolate the BG and render it completely OOF.

Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

What a beautiful capture in a vertical format Joe, the very sharp image certainly holds a scientific import my friend, TFS and cheers,
Mehmet
