Amazing, Joe,
I never bothered with an ISO 1600 and I have the same camera as you. But as you made such a fine close portrait of a female Blackbird at ISO 1600 I shall now have that in the back of my mind when taking shots in poor light.

Very good portrait of female Blackbird. Very good handling of high ISO, I can't see any sign of noise. Nice pin sharp details, good colours and composition and nice BG.

Hi Joe

Ok, so you got the secret of the high ISO well and truly sorted out. Not a single speck of evidence of any noise in the BG and the shutter speed is user friendly. However, over and above that, you have followed Gert Ellstrom's main ingredient for a sure success and that is the tripod. Even at high shutter speeds the man slavishly makes use of his tripod and it shows in his photos and here one can see it now in your photo as well.

Great work from a great student. The detail are superb, the colours are pleasing, the BG is just pure magic, the exposure is absolutely spot on thus ensuring amazing contrasts on the darkish plumage, and that big lively eye is something special.

ISO 1600 it is cool. Quality of an image is really very good. At whole I like this skillfully done portrait work. Framing and composition are perfect. Sharpness and details of the bird image are excellent as well as the colouration and smoothness of the BG. My best wishes and TFS.

I agree the quality of this is really good - very little grain and lots of very good detail in the feathers. I think it may help that these are mainly mid-tones - in my experience the blacks and whites or, conversely, shots with very little tonal range (low light) do not come out so well.

Anyway, this is an excellent image - great framing and excellent eye contact.

At ISO 1600, you must be needing a lot of light, Joe.
But then at shutter speed 1/800, you seem to have lot of it already :-)!
Be that as it may, you have again made a woderful close-up portrait of the bird.
I can see something reflected in its eye. Is that a bit of sky?
