Small Skipper, Thymelicus sylvestris

This is a male Small Skipper as you can see from the diagonal sex brands on the forewings, which are just catching some of the light. Although they are supposed to be on the wing from late June, this is the first day that I have found one in this summer.

Sometimes you have to carry your own sunlight with you. Today was such a day with bright but cloud-covered skies and a cool breeze. There were not many butterflies flying but the cool helped me when I found this one, as he was flying relatively little and settling often.

The image is illuminated from two Nikon mini-lights used as fill-in flash. These are mounted on the front of the lens and are perhaps 600-700mm from the subject. The image has been cropped and resized for TN. It has also had noise reduction by Neat Image and some selective sharpening in Photoshop.

Hi Alan. This is one Butterfly i do like very much. I think its because its small but robust looking. You have taken this one with good detail and sharp focusing. A nice pose on the blade of grass. With such natural looking colours. well done TFS.

Hello Alan,
Beautiful photo of this skipper in superb sharpness and details. Great natural colours and a beautiful contrast against the OOF BG. Good POV.

nice close-up of the cute butterfly with the fat body and the pretty orange wings; sharpness and details are great as well
as the composition and the fine pose. good job & best wishes, thor.

Hello Alan,
A fine macro of a Small Skipper taken from an excellent POV to show most of it including the light-coloured tips of the antennae, with fine sharpness aagainst a contrasting neutral BG.
Thanks and it's nice to see a species that is found in Denmark but not in Sweden!
Regards,
Ivan

Hi Alan,

A good shot of the small skipper, it must have been one of those days when a few of us seemed to spot a few species. Thi is a fine sharp image showing good detail and fine colours. A good natural pose. Like Nick I also find it robust looking.

TFS regards Bill
