The Spotted Longhorn, Leptura maculata

The Spotted Longhorn reaches a length of some 16 mm. The sexes are look a likes and the same size. It is yellow showing black markings. These markings are extremely variable. Animals that are almost entirely yellow are in existence, and animals almost completely black have also been reported. It is a very local species, even though it may be abundant. It is also seen on flowers in gardens regularly. It is even called the Flower Longhorn in Denmark! The larvae live in old tree stumps. For a long time it was known as Strangalia maculata, but has more recently been placed in the genus Leptura.

This beetle was feeding yesterday on a thistle. Once you find them, these insects are much easier to photograph than butterflies, as they do tend to move more slowly and be less prone to disturbance. So I as able to get fairly close and use the fill-in flash to get enough light for a good depth of field. This means that head-on shots like this are possible without losing detail on the parts of the insect further away from the lens.

The picture has been cropped, resized and sharpened in Elements 6.

Hi Alan
A good flashed macro of this common but colourful longhorn. The purple thistles set it off perfectly.

Hello Alan,
This beetle on photo is so big that remind to me cartoon films for children about insects. I like your composition.

Hello Alan!
Very colourful capture of Cerambycidae beetle. I like vivid colourd and very nice saturation. DOF should be a little better (especially in head part o insect) but in general it is very nice photo :)
Greetings,
Radomir
