[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Photographing insects presents various challenges. My main interest is, of course, butterflies, but on some days the right ones come along only occasionally. Then I start looking at other insect orders and among the most noticeable of these are the Hymenoptera, and of those the large, slow-moving Bumble Bees make good, easy subjects to snap away at to pass the time. This was exactly the situation a few days ago in Bernwood Forest, when it was cool with only rare intervals of sunshine.

I took numerous bee, beetle and fly pictures, but this one turns out to be one of my favourites from that collection. I think its because of the way the bee merges into the shape of the flower head. For me it makes the composition by creating a perfect profile. The species is, I think, Bombus hortorum. The Natural History Museum has a good section on Bumble Bee identification here.

The image has been treated in the usual ways in Photoshop, cropping, resizing and sharpening. The picture was hand-held in cool light and fill-in flash was used to allow a small aperture in order to increase the depth of field.

Hi Alan,

Nice to see that you are experimenting with other species, this is a good composure, with good focus showing fine detail, colours compliment the bee and the background just makes the picture stand out well.

TFS regards Bill
