[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Small Skipper, Thymelicus sylvestris

A few days ago I posted an image showing the upperside of this specimen and here, for full measure, is the underneath, plus more detail of the head end.

Not a lot more to say, as we know sylvestris quite well on TN, but this is another using my fill-flash at f/16 method, which I am beginning to like, as long as I can get within range of a sitting subject.

Hi Alan,

Taken from a nice POV, fine focus giving fine details, colours and natural. Very nice background. Your mini flash is certainly doing a good job.

TFS regards Bill

Hello Alan,
The result of the f/16 in the DOF is very good. Excellent sharp focus and details. Beautiful colours with the fill-flash. Great POV, composition and OOF BG.
Regards,
Peter

Hi Alan,

What an impressive close-up of such a small skipper! Sharpness is just perfect with nice POV and good DOF. Great details of the eyes and antennae. I like the blurred BG. Splendid shot!

Hello Alan,
Here you have used fill-in flash without causing the 'night-time' effect, an effect that is undesirable in day-flying species like this Small Skipper. The salient features are well seen with good sharpness from this POV.
Thanks and kind regards,
Ivan

Hi Alan,

An interesting macro.
Interesting concept of achievement.

Hi, Alan
Nicely balanced flash exposure here, and your photograph shows the orange antenna tips well. There is a very slight softness to this, and some of your other f16 + flash images on my screen, but I don't know whether this is a software/sharpening issue or optical. The image quality of your Sigma lens would be expected to deteriorate at apertures smaller than around f/8 to f/11 (it varies) due to diffraction effects, so there is a definite trade-off between DOF and IQ by the time you reach f/16 (never worried about that with film;)
Best wishes, Nigel.

Hello Alan!
Very nice close-up of Small Skipper. I like frontal POV and good clarity/DOF. Colours are vivid and saturation very nice.
Bravo and TFS!
Radomir
