Hi all I'm back. Happy New Year to everyone, I've been a bit ill, I got better but broke my computer. Thanks to those who thought of me.

Here's a heron looking pretty fed up with ducks. I watched this heron later this day and it did get a fishy meal so please don't feel sorry for it.

Ardea cinerea
The largest European heron. It can stand with neck stretched out, looking for food, or hunch down with its neck bent over its chest. In flight it holds its neck retracted and has large rounded wings. It is usually solitary although several birds may feed fairly close together. It stalks its food, often standing motionless for some considerable time. It usually feeds close to the bank or shore, but may wade out into shallow water.

Breeds colonially in tall trees near to plentiful fish supplies. Woodland close to inland lakes, gravel pits and marshes, and also near to estuaries and coastal marshes, especially in Scotland. Scarcer in upland areas.

I got the notes from the RSPB website.

I don't think I'll be able to contribute daily for a while but I will try my best. I hope you like the picture.

A new "toy" to play with ? ;-)

Welcome back Paul, good to see you again. Love ly heron there, detail is good, and I like the surroundings.

Well, well, well.... I am glad to see you back and posting. Been missing the bugs and they nearly converted me to a "birdman", even Howard is posting birds as I am. :)

How's the new camera? Congrats. Now I am jealous. A fine lens you got for it too.

Nice interesting subject and compo. Who built him the raft? Nice shot Paul. Don't stay away for too long.

Welcome Back Paul as you have noted you have ben much in peoples thoughts, glad things are better.
good return image the lighting on the heron is very nice, though I would be tempted to crop just below the duck nearest the raft to remove the OOF ones, and for me it makes it a stronger image.

Glad to see a post from you again Paul! Hope you're feeling better real soon..Very good compostion & setting. Too bad the Heron's not standing astride an alligator! :-0 Maybe next time hey! TFS

Great picture Paul. Nice composition and good DOF.

And you return with a great shot : a rafting heron!
Very good composition, nice sharpness and colours.
A great toy you bought, I hope I can see a lot of macro shot with it at spring!

Hi Paul
It is good to have you back and that the bugs are now sorted out, even in the PC. I have been holding on to some creepies for you and Gerhard, so watch this space.
This is a nice e compo. The heron and the 3DD's, and him looking into the distance
And I see you have joined the "ranks" with a new baby, hope you will have a lot of joy with the new toy! Congrats. I think it is a great camera.

I am glad to see you back again Paul.
I am almost one mounth back on the side, and I am happy to be here again. Then I heard that you was ill for a long time and I was worry. Now you are back and I am happy too see

I am very satisfied that you are back on TN, Paul. Even today I wondered that happened of you and Ricardo. You are back, but always no news of Ricardo.
And you return with a photo of my favorite bird. What an enjoyment! And three mallards for Gert.
Great composition and PoV. Excellent DoF on the main subject.
A great post: picture and note.
Thanks and a year full of discoveries and joys
for you too.

You got yourself a D20 I see. I would also have hidden for so long if I bought something that nice. Congratulations on it.

The exposure is what struck me most here. The Heron reall stands out. The sharpness is great and I like the composition.

Very well done and thanks for posting.
