Wolf Spider - Pardosa amentata


I know this image could have been a lot sharper.
Since discovering the wolf spiders (carrying egg sacs) in our garden I’ve been waiting like an expectant Father for them to hatch.
This has now been going on for a few weeks but because they are so fast I’ve been unable to get a good enough image to post.
This one is hot of the press, literally. I’ve been watching this particular spider for a while, easy to identify as she only has three legs on her left side. She wasn’t around at all yesterday, and then I spotted her earlier this morning carrying her spiderlings.
I will try and get a better image soon. She has a particularly large neighbour who looked ready to burst yesterday so hopefully she’ll be parading her new arrivals soon as well.

Description:

Male 5 - 8mm. Dark grey or brown, sometimes almost black, usually with a pale stripe down the middle of the thorax and a pale band, often broken into dots, at each side.

Habits:

A fast running, diurnal hunter, usually scurrying over the ground or low vegetation in search of flies and other small insects. The female carries her eggs in a lens-shaped silken parcel attached to her spinnerets, and can often be seen sun-bathing at this time. When the spiderlings hatch, they climb onto the female's back and are carried around for a while, gradually dropping off to make their own way in the world. Male spiders can be sometimes seen signalling to the females by waving their black, clubbed palps. Adult in summer and autumn.

Habitat and range:

Most open habitats with plenty of bare ground and some shelter and moisture; often found on garden rockeries. Common throughout the UK.

Very well done Juila, I know you've been trying for a while. Looks like you got your reward, patience pays off. Good shot, great to see all those spiderlings. I wouldn't fancy being the ones on the bottom! It's kind of nice to think that something so disliked by many people shows some degree of parental care. Well done. Be careful on the ID's of Pardosa, they are not easy especially has the adult markings can be variable and fade.

The focus is great, I can see every hair on her body.

This is great! I think the image sharp enough and you can easily see the little spiders on the back. Wonderful, what an image!! It's great that all your effort paid off in time. I hope your livingroom cushions do not have stains by now. ;) I am looking forward in seeing more pictures like this. Well done & TFS!

Hi Julia, I'm amazed by this capture its so interesting and has answered something that has been puzzling me. Iv been watching various spiders that occupy different parts of my garden. Iv noticed A group that seemed to have these abnormal abdomens. Now I realize they are carrying egg sacs. I must keep my eye on this situation. This is excellent work, very well done.

Hi Julia, what an incredible shot :). I particularly like your workshop close up. It's superb to see the tiny spiderlings all clinging to mum like that. It's sharp enough to give a real impression of spiderdom for the babies and that has to be a really unusual achievement in photoland. Very well done :)
