Araneus diadematus – Garden Spider


Description: Male 4 - 8mm, female 10 - 15mm. Both sexes have a clear white cross of irregular-sized dots on the abdomen. Ground colour ranges from bright orange to black, but is usually some shade of brown.

Habits: Spins a more or less vertical orb-web, usually well off the ground on bushes or fences, or between the branches of trees, and catches a wide range of flying insects. The spider usually hides close to the web, but sometimes sits motionless in the middle. Adult late summer and autumn, when the webs are most obvious. Over winters in the egg stage, the eggs being enclosed in silken bags fixed in bark crevices or under window sills. Swarms of tiny yellow and brown spiderlings emerge from the bags in spring.

Habitat and range: Almost any well-vegetated habitat: abundant in hedgerows and gardens. Very common throughout the UK.

This image is for my son, Ethan.

He is away this week on a school trip in Dorset and today is his ninth birthday. It’s very strange not having your child at home for a week, but for their birthday is almost unbearable.

I hope this image meets with his approval. We’ve been viewing a beast outside our front door for the past few weeks. She’s huge and bright orange. Unfortunately she only comes out when its dark, spends the first couple of hours re-building her web (is it true that they eat them?) and then settles in the middle of it. You can normally catch me outside (generally in my PJ bottoms!) trying (unsuccessfully) to get ‘the’ shot.

This not so large beast resides in the ivy in our back garden. She was originally in the middle of her web but I got a bit too close so she hid under a leaf.
If you look carefully you can see that she is in the middle of a meal.

Oh, and this is also my 50th post!

Critiques [Translate]

Nice capture of the garden spider Julia. They indeed eat their own web when it is broken. I think this helps them in rebuilding a new one fast as they "recycle" the ingredients. I like the earthy tones in your image and shapness on it's head, the only thing I could nit about is the dark shadow on it's back. A very nice image!
