[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This image was taken at Frimley Hatches Nature Reserve which is excellent for all types of nature, as well as a spot of fishing, if you’re that way inclined.

Enoplognatha ovata

The Enoplognatha ovata can be very variable in colour. The paired black spots are always present. Its size is between 3 and 6 mm. The spider can be found on low vegetation and bushes, but can often be found on garden sheds. The female makes a bluish egg sac. The leaf in which she makes here egg sac is often slightly rolled. The E. ovata is very similar to E. latimana.


The colouring of this spider is quite variable, some of them have red markings some have no markings and are just pale green.

Soldier Beetle – Cantharis Rustica


While the name may imply something less than desirable, Soldier Beetles (family Cantharidae) are considered to be beneficial insects. These good bugs are predators to a host of bad bugs including cucumber beetles, aphids, spider mites, various caterpillars, grasshopper eggs, beetle larvae and other insects and their eggs. While both the adults and larvae are predators, the adults will supplement their diet with pollen from plants such as wild lettuce, milkweed, hydrangea, and goldenrod - good things to have growing in your garden to encourage them to stay.

The adult beetles resemble fireflies, but don’t light up. They are slender, elongate, relatively flat insects, 1/3 - 1/2 inches long with a narrow, black abdomen, a bright red head or thorax and long, leathery wing covers.

The larvae are flat and dark-coloured and covered with hairs that give them a "velvety" appearance. The immature stages of soldier beetles are somewhat like the immature forms of lady beetles but are larger and more slender. Also soldier beetle larvae tend to be terrestrial rather than living on plants as lady beetle larvae do.

Soldier beetles go through a complete metamorphosis. Adults lay the eggs in clusters in the soil and have one or two offspring during the season. The larvae over winter in the soil and pupate in the spring.

There were a couple ‘copulating’ just next to this spiders web, this one wasn’t so lucky.

Hi Julia, nice shot. I can help you with the ID, it's Enoplognatha ovata. There are three colour forms and this is the most common, there is a form with two red bands and a form with a single broad red band.

Sad but true - spider also has to eat ;-) Good moment and capture. I like composition, mood made by brown colours, shapes and pieces of spider's web everywhere. Very good work Julia!
