This is the first time I’ve ever photographed a Frog :-) I’d probably never have thought of it if it weren’t for TN and the diversity of nature I see and learn about here every day. The picture was taken yesterday at the British Wildlife Centre in Lingfield, Surrey.

I like to write informative notes, however I have absolutely no idea what species this is and so I’m stuck for anything to write. He was a tiny little fellow, perhaps 30-40mm long, and there were a number of them basking on logs next to the water. Any help with the ID would be appreciated.

Shutter 1/500
Aperture f/10
Exposure Bias -0.33
ISO 640 - forgot to reset it after my last time out :-(
Focal Length 420mm (35mm film equivalent 630mm – have to love the CCD crop factors :-))
Handheld

Post-processing:
Neatimage to get rid of noise which actually wasn’t too bad
Sharpen
Burn tool to darken the rocks slightly

Hello Adrian,

Superb picture my friend! I think it is the prince frog dreaming about its desired princess! I like very much your title!!! You managed very well the exposure and did a great composition by having the bg having all that space! I bet that it didn't stay there for long :-)

Great picture and thank you for sharing

Michel

Love the title and POV!

Hi Adrian, Personally, I think the POV is what makes this shot special. I don't know how you managed to get it without an angle finder and I was there! Did you sneak into the pond while I wasn't looking or are you double-jointed? It's a lovely shot :)
It was great to see you and everyone else, next stop Arundel...

Great dov and pov, that shows the lovely shore the frog see. Beautiful composition with the stone and the frog blended.
Best regard my friend,

Hi Adrian,

Wonderful shot my friend. The original PoV is excellent and very well chosen. It looks like the frog is trying to decide wether or not he can make such a big jump. From that angle it looks like he's on the summit of a mountain rather than a small log in a pond.

Regards, Mark.

Nice one Adrian. Don't feel too bad about the wrong ISO setting... I left my camera on apature priority for a few shots when using a fill flash on the fox. I like how you have taken an artistic view here, that is not obvious from the thumbnail and put us into the frog's mind. The best detail is that we can just see part of the frog's eye.

Nice shot Adrian,
The details are nice, clear and sharp.
Good colours, lighting and exposure. The POV is good.
Well composed and nicely framed.
Thanks for posting, have a great end to the week.

Adrian

Is this the one just before he jumped or a different one altogether?

You really have managed to make the other side of the 'puddle' look so very far away.

10/10!

Emma

Hi Adrian,
To me this shot is all about the composition, and very fitting title. I can't help with the ID as I know nothing of UK frogs. I am amazed at the heavy texture of his skin. It much resembles a toads. It does make him blend in perfectly with the rocks. A great eye took this shot!
Scott

Hi Adrian,
Funny presentation!
A well composed image, captured with great clarity in colours and very fine details...
The world from a frog point of view!

Hi Adrian,

Hi Adrian, I like the simplicity and the good use of space on this one. I like the way the frog is just sitting over the water contemplating. Great lighting and clear details. I haven't yet seen a frog this year maybe I am looking in the wrong place but there just doesn't seem to be many about. Perhaps the hot weather is affecting them in the same as the fish I don't know, anyway nice one and thanks again.

Hi Adrian,

Well done.

Hello Adrian
A very beautiful post of your first frog. Lovely colors, interesting POV, very good sharpness and an excellent composition. All-in-all a really great work.
About the ID...i'm guessing somewhere between Rana temporaria and Rana ridibunda...but i can;t be too sure from this angle. Sorry :(

Cheers
Horia

This is a wonderful shot Adrain!
Like kermit looking for miss piggy :)
I love the detail and colour in the foreground and the soft background. Really great composition since the frog or toad is sitting to one side . I love this photo TFS Janice

Hi Adrian
What an interesting heading implying that a frog may dream of 'Distant Shores...' Who knows? The sharp detail in the foreground and the hazy OOF BG with the frog peering into the distance gives the title quite a degree of plausibility or validity. However, it will need a mighty jump to make it to the other side. Very original, very captivating, and very well done.

'Tis The Deed That Matters

Time goes by and by and by,
death and birth and death and birth.
Step upon the clay just once
and shape forever our hallowed earth,

A solitary tear may fall,
In darkness deep a child may call,
from places neither near nor far,
Beware lest you yourself become
the one who grabs but never grasps,
the one who cannot see the sum
for the things that happened in the past.

A tree may fall in a desolate wood,
A wave may wash a distant shore,
A wish may ne'er be what it could,
A child may yearn for more and more,
Yet all that lives and all that breathes,
all that walks and all that sees,
all that dreams and all that needs,
all that binds and all that frees,
leaves its mark upon the sacred ground,
none need be there to hear the sound,
to know the lost were never found,
to feel the water meet the sand,
remove what yet is in the hand,
or see him walk upon this land.

Be not so bold as to assume
that all will be as it should be soon,
if actions speak with words unheard,
be not dismayed along the road,
'tis not the thought that fulfils the need,
the answer lies within the deed.
Find the truth you dare to dream
upon the page no one has seen.

A poem by Gary Wassner from GemQuest, Book IV, The Revenge of the Elves.

it's not an easy one you show us here Adrian,
it would be nicer when the frog turn hisself on for 1/4 but thats the luck you must have in this kind of compositions, the idea for the composition is great, the pov is good and the dof is fantastic, yes I like it, very good job.
gr. jaap

Hi Adrian,
Most frog photos are from the front and completely zoomed in on it. Yours shows us the habitat of the frog and its POV. I find this so much more attractive and really creative. This is just an oustanding photo with so much more to see and with such a well choosen title that I put it in my fav's as a reminder of what I want to acomplish in the future.
TFS,
Niek

Artistic capture and well presented, great title..Sharp detail and well composed with nice color, BG, and you've managed the difficult light well :)
"Dreaming of Distant Shores"..does that mean Dallas ;)
Very well done.

Hello Adrian,
I must say I'm very impressed with this picture! It's very aristic and I love the way you framed it. Portrait framing allow to see what the frog was looking at. Picture has very good DOF and lovely colours too. Maybe just the frog is a little too bright but I'm not sure if this is really a nit.
But I'm definitely sure I like it a lot! :-)
Great post!
