[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This was taken in my favourite butterfly hunting spot, a field next to the River Mole. This time I saw a Small Copper, Lycaena phlaeas.

Males are territorial, often choosing a piece of bare ground or a stone on which to bask and await passing females. They behave aggressively towards any passing insects, returning to the same spot when the chase is over.

Though it remains a common and widespread species, the Small Copper declined throughout its range during the twentieth century

Habitat
It occurs in a wide variety of habitats: chalk grassland, moorland, heathland, coastal dunes and undercliffs, woodland clearings, and unimproved grassland. This species may be found also in small patches of land such as set-aside fields, roadside verges, railway embankments, allotments, churchyards, and waste ground, even in cities. Warm, dry situations are especially favoured.

The Small copper caterpillar feeds on Dock. Unlike a lot of other species the young caterpillar eats the surface of the leaves. This fits in with the area as there were plenty of Dock plants around.

A really beautiful shot!
The focus on the butterfly is spot-on and the DOF is great.
Splendid colors and good lighting enhance the picture even more. Great POV, framing and composition, too.

What a lovely well balanced photo, the butterfly really stands out against the background and the yellow flowers add a warm glow, well done.

Really sharp, and a good POV showing us all of the best part of the wings. Some may prefer a view from the front showing us the head but I like this. Good DOF as well, getting most of the flowers in focus as well as the butterfly.

Very good exposure and sharpness. Nice details and colors.
