[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I mentioned to Niek (Suntoucher) that I would try a landscape today...and then I woke up to a heavy freezing fog where you couldn't see more than 100 yards in front of you, let alone a nice view. Ever the optimist I set off early anyway and I did manage to capture a couple of shots during patches in the fog. I'm not a landscape expert but I thought I would try and post the results for critiques. The sky here looks very white but that was the heavy fog.

Time period of winter
Astronomically, it starts with the winter solstice (around December 21 in the Northern Hemisphere and June 21 in the Southern Hemisphere), and ends with the spring equinox (around March 21 in the Northern Hemisphere and September 21 in the Southern Hemisphere). In meteorology, it is by convention counted instead as the whole months of June, July and August in the Southern Hemisphere and December, January and February in the Northern Hemisphere.

However, in the United Kingdom and Ireland the winter solstice is traditionally considered as midwinter, the winter season beginning November 1 on All Hallows or Samhain. Winter ends and spring begins on Imbolc or Candlemas, which is February 1 or 2. This system of seasons is based on the length of days exclusively. The three-month period of the shortest days and weakest solar radiation occurs during November, December and January in the Northern Hemisphere (May-July in the Southern).

In Chinese astronomy (and other East Asian calendars), winter is taken to commence on or around November 7, with the Jiéqì known as (立冬 lì dōng, literally "establishment of winter".)

In reality, the three-month period associated with the coldest average temperatures typically begins somewhere in late November or early December in the Northern Hemisphere. If "winter" is defined as the statistically coldest quarter of the year, then the astronomical definition is too late by almost all local climate standards, and the traditional English/Irish definition of November 1 (May 1 in the Southern Hemisphere) is almost always too early to fit this standard. No matter the recogning, winter is the only season that spans two calendar years in the northern hemisphere. (In other words, there are very few temperate climates in which the vernal equinox is on average colder than the winter solstice, and very few temperate climates in which Samhain is colder than Imbolc)

In Sweden, winter is defined by meteorological institute SMHI as the period where average temperature over day/night is steady below 0 degrees C.

Your picture really transmits the cold and low temparaures there, with all that freezing fog as you mentioned.
The POV is a really good one, you find a very appropiate patch to shot the camera.
I think this photo has a very nice composition.

This one is really stunning! I love the beautiful warm fall colors and the foggy/forsted BG. This is the kind of landscape I would love to see for my self. Good FG interest with a nice focal point of the lake and a stunning FG.

I hope you enjoyed your first experience with landscape photography and I hope we will see more from you on this subject. Maybe you don't consider yourself an expert, but you know what you are doing and you do it good.

I think you have done an excellent job here. This is a very nice landscape. The different colours of the branches, grasses and trees are wonderful. Nice depth and fog on the water.

very nice indeed with a very tricky type of weather to handle, as i found out today! i like the tufts of grass amongst the foliage in the FG, and the faint slope of the hill in the BG completes it.

Lines created by wild grasses at FG is amazingly beautiful. Colors are also great.
I feel like that it will be nicer if you crop upper part of this image slightly [see workshop].

Hi Karan

What a wonderful first-landscape shot from you!
You've really learned a lot from some fellow TN-ers and you've applied those lessons very well.
You may not be an expert right now, but you definately have all the prospects of being one soon :)
The composition here is simply great: i like the detailed grass in the FG (especially those interesting round things), the great centered spot on the lake and the charming misty BG.
The mood is also fantastic - given by the fog and the simply palette of colors, and the exposure is spot-on.
Very well done, indeen!
BTW, if you decide to go for this type of photography, too (and you have all the reasons to do it :) ), you don't have to worry about the bright sky...you'll definately alliminate that problem with a set of ND-grad filters :)

Anyway, conrgatulations and hope to see more :)

Very nice view with excellent rich colours in spite of the winter season. I like yor POV and exact defines DOF: details and sharpness of whole image is perfect. Foggy part of the scene is very expressive too. Nice, pleasant for look landscape. My compliments and TFS.

Excellent shot. I like the yellow grass in the foreground and the trees in the bg very much. Good composition, and the fog adds to the beauty too.
