[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Pyrochroa coccinea or cardinal beetle PYROCHROIDAE: from the Greek "pyros" (a fire) + "chroma" (a color) - origin of the common name and a reference to the bright red or orangish color in some species.
This bright red beetle has black, comb-like antennae. Adult red-headed cardinal beetles are seen from May to July, occasionally on flowers but often on vegetation and tree bark in sunny weather. The brownish-cream larvae are extraordinarily flattened to enable them to live in very narrow spaces under loose bark. A similar species, the black-headed cardinal beetle Pyrochroa coccinea may be found in gardens in Wales and the western Midlands but is rare in the rest of England. Predatory on other insects. Adults take flying insects from flowers and leaves, the larvae feed on larvae of other decaying wood-feeding insects living under the bark of broadleaved trees.

Hi Sue,
we posted both a cardinal today.. but diffrent types ;-). Yet in color they both are very simular. This capture is excellent, the DOF is very good to show off this insect. POV, sharpness and lighting are great.

Hi Sue, I know this is all about the beetle and a good photo of mim but I also like the leaves here. There is good detail and texture in the front which really helps to make it a nice photo. The beetle being black and red looks very good against it. I like the gap between the two leaves also, makes a pleasant composition. Good work, thanks.
