Hi Sue,
I caught the same Hoverfly today, but your shot is so much nicer! The frontal view, the great sharpness, the strage animal, the composition with the leaf spikes seemingly radiating out from the animal, well done, Sue!
It is one of the Bumblebee-hoverfies, difficult to identify, my bet is the Narcissus bulb fly, Merodon equestris. If you look at the antennae, you can distinguish a fly easily from a bumblebee. On the workshop picture of the animal, you notice the very thick hind legs and the unbranched aristae, typical for this species.
Best regards,
Dietrich
