Ancient Yew (Taxus baccata). This shot of this magnificent old tree was taken at Kingley Vale, near Chichester, West Sussex. The area is home to one of the largest remaining yew woods in Europe. Some of the trees are believed to be over 2,000 years old. A pity some of the largest specimens were destroyed in World War II by soldiers using them as targets for mortar practice (what is it with our species?!).
Yews have been revered by human cultures for millennia. Their wood is traditionally used in bow making. The leaves and seeds are poisonous.

Hi Vinny,
great monumental tree, excellent POV, nice shadow and light , fine colours. It is incredible that trees can live so long- I've never seen such huge Taxus baccata.
