Bombus Lapidarius, or the related Monticola.

Both of these species are similar in appearance,Lapidarius being robust and larger, Monticola being much smaller, but it gets confusing as the workers of Lapidarius can be quite small!!!

The orange tail of Monticola also extends over a greater area than Lapidarius!!!

Lapidarius is widespread and common, Monticola is restricted to more moorland regions!... and as a species it is in decline... I am not 100% certain of the species, logic dictates Lapidarius, but other images will be studied to get verification.

But, this is not a worker, it is in fact a male or drone...Distinguished by the bright yellow facial hair.

This quite small bee was spotted whilst walking the dog....camera in hand, imaged whilst resting on a large Thyme Plant (Thymus pulegioides) hand held, manual focus. Macro flash used.

ISO 100
F-stop f/7.10
Shutter speed 1/200

Shot in RAW, image cropped, zoomed to 66%, clarity added and mild sharpening.

I do not profess this to be a particularly good photograph, the joy of just getting this on film is justification enough for me.

P/S.... off to the pub, will critique later!!!!

Hi Howard,
This is very close! I don't have the lens to do such pictures! Details are superb and so is brilliance, this is impressive. If possible I would have cropped it a bit to the right side to make subject a little less centered but this is minor nit. Well seen!
Claudine

Lovely macro, Howard!

Hello Howard,

Hi Howard,
Very well focused on the face/eyes where it must be.
The short DOF is a good technique for this type of shot IMHO..
Great details, color, and I enjoy the portrait style composition :)

I think the focus and detail on the face and head is excellent. Exposure is well managed and the colors on bee are outstanding. Also a very good composition.

Hello Howard,
superb macro of this Bee.
The light from your flash is very nicely diffused. I once had a go at photographing and bumble bee with the built-in flash in my camera but it came out too sparkly (if you know what I mean by sparkly!) :-)
Very sharp with good detail.
Great composition too.

Well done!

Joe
