I went up on to the Dorset downs today we had some sunshine but it was very windy . I saw a few different butterflies but no really good pictures so i will have to go back when the wind has gone. It was one of the few that was not being blown about.

Thanks to Ivan and Ulla i now know this to be the Small skipper not the large as had thought . new notes to come.

Hi Nick,
Focus, sharpness, details, lighting and well saturated colors are very nice. TFS
Best wishes,

Large skipper...? wow I didn't know there were smaller and larger. I learn something new each day...and as in Damsel and Dragon...perhaps there should be Skippers and Skipettes! Then this would be the golden King skipper! Super sized-super-shot! Or as my good friend Michael Stipe says from one of his latest songs...Supernatural Superserious!
Bob

Hello Nick
It has been exceptionally windy here as well and I amazed that you even set off with the Macro lense and tripod let alone came back with such a stunning capture like what I would say is a Large Skipper..(it looks to be exactly the same as the one in my book..but you know how wrong I can be at identifying!!)
Paul

I think you have these shots cracked..the detail and clarity is first class, a very good image, the background is just perfect..nice work Nick!!!

Bonjour Nicholas, I can spot those beautiful, bright colours of yours now! And it is so sharp and bright, just perfectly bright. The details are amazing and it is stunning that the depth of field is encompassing the whole butterfly. I looooove looking at this beautiful picture. Thank you!

Hello Nick,
Sorry I missed this one.
This is a Small Skipper (Thymelicus sylvestris).
The large skipper has light chequered markings on the wings whereas markings on the wings of Small skippers are practically absent. You can tell Essex Skippers from Small by their dark-tipped antennae and here tha tips are distinctly light-coloured.
The fine sharpness and POV all help to contribute to the right ID.
TFS this fine image.
Have a good week,
Ivan

Un excelente enfoque a pesar de esa potente iluminación. Interesante trabajo con el color.

Hi Nicholas!

You present us a fine close up of that magnificent butterfly. The sharpness is perfect and highlights a lot of details of that hairy little guy. I also appreciate the naturally blurred background. And as you tell in your notes, sometimes it's hard, even impossible to come home with a good butterfly picture! So many conditions and factors have to be fine to realize a good one.

Kind regards

Markus
