Once again a dull day with some rain showers , but i still went up to the forest for a few hours. Not the best light for taking pictures. This is a young Robin yet to get his Red feathers on his breast, this should happen by the autumn. He was already protecting his territory .

Robin ( Erithacus rubecula ) Length 14cm.
The Robin is one of the most familiar and popular garden Birds of all. The Robin is an aggressive species with the males sometimes fighting to the death to defend their territory.
The male and female are almost identical with brown crown, wings, upperparts and tail, a grey band along the sides of the breast, white belly and the famous red breast which is actually a deep orange colour. Juvenile Birds can cause confusion as they lack red in their plumage, being a rather dull spotty brown in colour.
Robins sing all year round, defending summer and winter territories with their fluty melodic song.
The Robin can be found in almost every garden as it is one of the tamest Birds, happily feeding alongside humans as they work. They will often take live food such as Earthworms or Mealworms from the hand.
Breeds from March to August building a cup shaped nest from grass and leaves lined with hair. Lays 4-6 pale blue-white eggs lightly spotted with red and incubates for 13-15 days. The young fledge after 12-14 days. They often have two broods

Hi Nick,
We still have dull weather here as well... This is a beautiful capture of this young one. Details are very sharp and I like the fact that the bird is isolated on this beautiful green background. Patterns on our young robins look a bit like these... Well seen and well done!
Claudine

Hi Nicholas,
You really took good advantage of the available light there.
Proper exposure and the tripod's help produced this brilliant image.
I like so much the fine details on the plumage, both patterns and colours.
Excellent composition with soft background.
My compliments and thanks for share.
Best regards,
JM

this clean shot definitely points out the major differences in Robins from England to the US...it almost doesn't look from the same family...you see? Dull days can indeed provide for some good well detailed images..Many of my old timer friends intensely dislike shooting on a sunny day. It made for extra work in the darkroom with dodging and burning, which is why I left a lot of that up to Jane who had the patience..Well done Nick. Very sharp!
Bob

Hi Nicholas,
Never thought this could be a Robin. No red at all...and it doesn't look so young?
You photographed it well. For instance there are no distracting elements in your composition. The content is special due to the fact that it's a juvenile; beautiful bird.
Well done
TFS

Hi Nicholas
it's a very good BG for this image..
the bird's silhouette is improved by this.
great sharpness and the absence of others elements in th image make this sharpness pull out the photo..

well done.

Taba

The clarity, compo and beautiful background are spectacular issues about the photo of yours. As always youth is beautiful. TFS

Hi Nick,

A dull day here too. I just read that we were having "unknown precipitation." Duh. How about rain during the monsoon season? This young robin is wonderful. I love the pose and the youthful expression on his face. Excellent natural colors and amazing details of the face and plummage. A perfect background and composition.

Great shot, Nick!
Superb sharpness and lighting in this capture of a juvenile Robin and the green light-coloured bokeh helps to set it off well. Nice composition as well.
Thanks for sharing this beauty,

Hello Nick,

you're right in terms of the aggressiveness of this little bird. But that can also sing beautifully. I hear theme in the middle of the night (sometimes at 3 am) in the winter!!. Nice photo. Very good composition. The diagonal branch is perfect for this photo. The clarity of his eye is magnificent. So sharp and colorful. Well done.

Thanks for sharing. Have a nice evening and TFS BOB

What a beauty Nick!
I found it interesting to hear that he was already becoming territorial.
You have captured the lovely mottled details of his breast, head and upper wings very well.

I had one in the garden a few weeks ago. He was trying to get the remnants of fat out of a plastic net bag and ended up with the bag on his head. He was able to shrug it off but it just shows how things intended for birds can become a danger!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)
