Meadow Brown, Maniola jurtina

This female Meadow Brown is feeding on, I think, a newly emerging Field Thistle flower (Cirsium arvense). We have had a very warm and sunny end to June in the south of England and it has been a great spectacle to see large quantities of grass-feeding Satyrids in the fallow fields and grassy rides in woodlands around my local area.

England is alive with butterflies right now and no longer do I need to travel to Italy for some interest!!

I have chosen this image primarily for the plain brown background which blends well with the colours of the butterfly while forming a great foil for the pale purple of the new thistle flower.

The picture was taken hand held with fill-in from two mini-lights set on the end of the lens. It has been cropped and resized as usual for TN, with some selective sharpening and some noise reduction.

Hi Alan. We have seen some fine pictures of the Meadow Brown on Tn this year and this is one of them. A good POV on the flower all with fine detail and sharp focusing. I like the more soft looking colours you have in this one. Well done TFS.

Hello Alan,
What a fine and subtle shot of Maniola jurtina. The colors are so natural and fine, the sharpness just right. May be your framing is a little bit tight on the lower part, you could have taken the whole buttons of the thistles. Just a suggestion :-).
