Silver-Washed Fritillary, Argynnis paphia
These large and powerful butterflies are on the wing in England from late June to early August, and this year have arrived right on time. In the very warm weather, though, they are extremely active and rest infrequently. Getting good shots is time-consuming and requires patience. Catching them in a net would be much easier than catching them in a camera.
The species overwinters as a larva and these feed on Dog Violets Viola canina. Here this adult is resting on a fern.
This picture was taken from perhaps 2 metres range, with some fill-in flash which has kept the exposure time to 1/200th. Still, it was necessary to use some noise-reduction software, especially on the darker parts of the BG. The picture has also been cropped and resized. |
